I thought this would have been obvious. CRC32 does exactly what they want, and still shows data integrity, so there's no point in changing to a considerably longer hash

Because SHA1 is long as fuck and they're not putting signatures in files for security reasons they're trying to verify if a file got borked during downloading or not.

All it is used is for data integrity checks.
Torrents have hashes per part as well, so they are only useful to verify that the torrent is the "real" release and not modified by someone before uploading to tpb.

I guess they could do sha-1, but it would make it long as fuck.

CRCs aren't designed for security they're extremely prone to collisions. Their main benefit over secure hashes is that they're small and they can be generated or checked very fast. They're only purpose is to verify file integrity.

I know, but if you want to spoof up a specific hash for the episode for whatever reason, various groups have done it in the past, it's much easier to bruteforce CRC than md5 or sha1.

Torrent protocol is very superior to direct downloading. It would probably be the most preferred method for distributing stuff if it weren't for the stupid copyright laws and media companies we have now.

DDL has a single point of failure and usually only a few pipes to distribute files. If a lot of people download at once it gets bogged down.

Torrent protocol intelligently finds the peers with the fastest connection and prefers them over the other peers so those peers will act as second sources for the file and help the other peers download faster. It also hash checks every single chunk that is downloaded so it is guaranteed to be accurate. Also if your data is somehow corrupted anyway the client can re-download just the corrupted chunks without even having to touch the rest of the file or files.

Torrent protocol is pretty ingenious.

This is pretty much it.
Companies don't even need to enter swarms to get lists of IPs of people on the torrent and then can blanket spam out emails, some countries have strike laws for these complaints however they are all linked to P2P, which XDCC and DDL aren't, and even if they spread to XDCC and DDL you can't get a downloaders IP address without going to the hoster or ISP so it becomes way more work.

From a pure technological standpoint, torrent is best.

Oh another part is those that don't upload back. If you don't upload content back to the swarm the protocol will give you super low priority and you'll get shit download speeds compared to the rest of the swarm so it's also self-regulating. The effects are usually only visible with high download and low seed torrents though.
