So I actually got to try one of these things for 20 minutes at a live event and also sat down with a dev to discus things like long range movement and further specs. Changed almost every bad opinion I had for VR.

I'll stick around this thread and answer any questions if /g/ has some legit ones.

It's lighter than other VR headsets I have tried (Note, I have not tried the Oculus, just some random startups)

There is a ton of padding and even though I was dragging a cord and had large headphones on it was comfortable. By the time the second demo started (3-5 minutes in) it was barely noticeable.

As someone who has tried a DK2, how big is the difference between it and the Vive? Do room scale tracking and controllers really have a significant effect on the experience?

Oculus will most likely be doing demos of CV1 at the next CES and I'll be there. I hope their main demos include Oculus Touch.

I've tried DK1 and Crescent Bay. The CB demo was fucking fantastic. Spatial audio was spot-on to the point where I forgot about it until the demo that heavily used it was over. Tracking was absolutely perfect even when turning around away from the camera (I expected the tracking to jump when switching to the tracker on the back of my head since everyone's head size is different, but it didn't), and the resolution was good enough for most things IMO (certainly not incredibly amazing, but it felt leagues above DK1)

I think Valve is going for more of a slow paced experience with the Vive. Every demo had me confined to a small area. With one demo I was on the deck of a sunken ship and though I was able to walk around and look off the side and all around an open area, I was still confined to that deck. The dev said that they want to make use of teleportation in games with fades to black between scenes so the vive should be great for walking sims. For action games like EVE or Elite maybe not so much.

If there is any lag in the tracking for the headset and controllers I did not see them. The experience was one to one. I could look at where my hand would be and see the controller and it just felt natural. As for inputs on each controller there is a touchpad, trigger, two face buttons, and a grip button.

The Vive had a resolution of 1080p per eye so if I focused I could see the pixels but if I did not look for them I could not see them. Talked about this with the dev who said if they can push it to 8k res per eye within the next few years there would be no difference between the quality of the image in VR and real life. Not sure how true that is though.

Yes, there is full support for the headset and tracking system through OpenVR. You should be able to build a module for your Gentoo kernel.

Going to a games industry convention on 31st, supposed to be vr panels and stuff, also cosplay
Going to be a first for me so looking forward to it, will probably go alone, though.

If there's some distortion it will. In between sets the screen kept flickering, which made me sick really quickly. But just closing my eyes in between sets fixed it.

I already have issue with my vision irl so all I can say is that the headset did not affect my vision any further than it already is. I could see far off details well but with the exception of the ship demo and the end of the portal one, everything was up close confined to a room.

For any followup questions about glasses or contacts my right eye is so fucked that it can not be corrected so I wear neither.

No, it has 1080x1200 (technically 1200P not 1080P) per eye, just like Rift CV1 (and CB, which I tried, had 960x1080 per eye).

Anyways besides the resolution in CB which is slightly lower than Vive and CV1, your experience is pretty much exactly the same as mine then. Great audio, great visuals, flawless tracking.

8k will be great if they get eye tracking up to snuff so graphics cards won't be starved and things outside the very small focus of our eye will be blurred properly.

So the Vive is made for the equivalent click adventure games for VR? I'm ok with this, actually. I could imagine a lot of the hard core gaming scene might not be though. Hope it's not a PS Move/Kinekt part II: Electric Boogaloo.
