You have to. Find a server with an open FTP protocol(doesn't have to be 22), find a vulnerability/CVE, exploit it, use it as your personal storage unit.

Depending on how updated it is, and if there's any IDS/IPS embedded in to it, it can range from being completely defenseless to near impossible. Hell, I've been able to elevate from anonymous to root on some FTP servers. Once that's done I just upload a reverse PHP shell, trigger it, and gain a system shell.

Dunno, was some server in China
Got in with standard vnc creds, there was an nginx install on it that that ran a local newspaper's website
