What's the difference between ubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu, lubuntu, and mint?
Is it just the DE or are there other changes too?

Also as someone about to move to Linux, which would you recommend to me?

Are there any custom kernels I can look at?

Mostly the DE is different.
There are some differences between default applications, like xu~ and lu~ use xterm and the gnome distribution is garbage.

Usually for general use, get Ubuntu. For lighter use, get Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

You can. They all offer that opportunity. If you know what you want, and you want a *buntu, then just install the appropriate one.

For DEs, KDE destroys everything else.

Don't bother if you're new. Their use tends to be highly specific.

You could, but if you know ahead of time it's easier to just pick a derivative and let it do the hard work for you. Personally I'd go with Xubuntu, but really it doesn't matter, as you know you can change it later.

I wouldn't be thinking about custom kernels at all yet if you're new. There's not usually much to gain unless you need a patch for some specific purpose.

I was only considering custom kernels since I mess around with my nexus 5 so much and since android is Linux based I thought there might be something similar.

Also, is fedora worth a look?
One of my mates is running Fedora on his laptop with xfce and it looks pretty good. Is there much difference between the 2 for a beginner?

There's lots, but usually stuff you won't notice unless you have a specific need for them. The kernel itself is not usually what you want to use a different version of, but the software that makes it usable.

Mint =/= ubuntu with cinimmon

mint uses ubuntu as a base but gives more stable repositories. For example kubuntu uses kde 5 which is buggy and crappy. Mint kde uses kde 4 which is more supported and works better.

I did a quick search on Google but for me it's always easier to understand things when people explain it in their own words like here.

Pretty much solved any question I had, I've decided to go with ubuntu and xfce.

You might want to just use Xubuntu if you're going for Ubuntu + XFCE anyway, since it's literally the same thing except with a different DE pre-installed.

I use Lubuntu almost exclusively for desktops at this point. It's super light, runs well on everything and gets the benefit of all the Ubuntu repos. All my hotelling machines run it. A Windows user can pick it up in about a minute. It's super performant.

But anyways, my friend recommended me using Xubuntu. I'm not an expert in GNU\Linux distributions, but it is stable and I didn't encounter any problems so far with it. I really like it.
I've tried Mint, it wasn't bad for me, I've liked it. But compared to Xubuntu, it's a bit more complicated, and I prefer Xubuntu's simplicity.

by the way, everyone forgets that Ubuntu with Unity was spyware for a long time. I wouldn't trust Ubuntu with Unity, even if you choose it, I'd pick another DE.

Unity is pretty comfy though
Not nearly as pretty as other DEs, but I've been enjoying it for the 2 days that I've had 15.10 installed.

Workspaces is something you should expect to find in ALL Linux window managers and desktop environments. It's been around since before Linux even existed in other *nixes.

It's something that should be expected, it's not something to "like" in the *nix world.

They're all basically the same. You can install one, and then install the DE package for another. LXDE is the lightest DE so Lubuntu is recommended for low-powered computers, but you could realistically install any of them and then sudo apt-get install lxde

There's also the Ubuntu Minimal install disc, if you don't want to re-download each flavour of Ubuntu just download that and then apt-get your DE of preference.

Mint has some extra proprietary stuff that is technically copyright infringement to ship with.

i would recommend arch ... just kidding. get anything with xfce, either mint or xubuntu.

They have also different programs preinstalled. Xfce in Xubuntu comes with xfce specific software for instance. Lxde in Lubuntu isn't even a real DE. Kubuntu comes with a huge pack of KDE dependencies. Mint comes with its own update manager and some other stuff.
