I don't know m8, Python has probably more third-party libraries available but Ruby has enough for any task you want.

I prefer python, to ruby. Although I use both.

You're not going to get an objective answer, so here's a list of subjective reasons.

> Faster prototyping
> SciPy, NumPy, PyBrain (libraries in general, really)
> Wider adoption (marginally)
> Clear differentiation between expressions and statements
> Easier to learn

I generally use python for any prototyping of a concept I need to try out (DSP mainly).

Then again, I am at the stage in my life where I will use the easiest language for the application. Sometimes learning a new language is easier than getting your favorite to do what you want.
