In what sense can't it be beaten? MIT or Heimdal Kerberos and OpenLDAP or 389Server or any number of other implementations already runs circles around Active Directory. Group Policy on Unix/Linux is any configuration/state management solution.
Supporting Windows desktops/laptops is the only reason to invest AD and to leverage Group Policy. Server-side, there are plenty of solutions that support both camps.
