Some people want that 4-6gb plan, and will be with the provider for years anyways.
The difference between a BYOD plan + buying your phone outright might not be that big between 2 year contract + phone.
Doing some quick math,
>BYOD on Rogers 2.5GB plan for $70>$1000 iphone >= ~$2,680 plus tax over 2 years>2 year contract same plan for $95/month>$400 iphone>= ~2680 plus taxSo really it ends up being pretty much the same cost withing a hundred bucks or two over 2 years.
The one disadvantage I can think of is the lack of freedom to jump between carriers in a contract, unless you can afford to pay off the remaining balance
