If you had to start from scratch, what would you do?

I'm finally moving into my own place and I don't plan to take my current PC with me (I'll be visiting home often). Right now I just own a single desktop computer riddled with external HDDs connected to my parents' wireless network, over which I have no control.

Since I'm starting from scratch, I want to do things right, instead of being a plebeian. I want to build a desktop PC running Windows for gaming and get a laptop running GNU/Linux for other stuff like browsing 4chan in bed. I want to be able to share downloaded TV shows and stuff between the two, as well as run game servers, and seed torrents while my other machines are off, so I'm assuming a home server would be a good idea. Please let me know if there's a better option. I'm also thinking about buying an Android tablet since browsing with Clover is pretty nice and I'd like a device to read manga with... Ideally it'd be able to read manga hosted on the home server, too.

It's also important I buy a decent router or whatever else I'd need so that the network is nice and fast.

If you were in my situation, what would your ideal setup be (assuming you've got a realistic budget)?

Is there a /g/ IRC channel I can ask for advice in? I know of a few but they're mostly for discussing anime. I'm not completely new to this stuff but I'm nowhere near confident enough to spend £££s without asking for advice, and I've got essentially no experience with non-Windows OSs.

Thanks in advance!
