NVLink? Nay, that's "only" a GPU interconnect. Rumors were they may replace their SLI bridge with it because it doesnt offer remotely enough bandwidth for 4K@60Hz/1440p@>100Hz and so on and they need to send quite a lot of data over the PCIe bus which sucks since they have no dedicated hardware for that.

AMD solved that via xDMA, their whole multi GPU DMA runs over the PCIe bus with anything past bonaire. Again, the same works with nvidia cards, but since they have no dedicated hardware for that and split communication up over the PCIe Bus and the (slow, only ~1GB/s omnidirectional) SLI bridge thats asking for more problems to happen.

In OPs pic all the inter GPU communication obviously runs over the PCIe bus and thats most likely the way nvidia will take for the future.

well, not really. it was confirmed at least for their Pascal HPC chips. we dont know if the smaller chips will come with NVLink (also this obviously doesnt replace the PCIe interface), if the smaller packages that they currently send around really are GP104 it most likely come without NVLink...

There's literally zero chance of this ever being a thing. Nvidia will lock it out at a driver level, just like they stopped people using an Nvidia card for dedicated PhysX with an AMD main GPU.

this is DX12, nvidias drivers only had lower overhead in DX11 (and probably earlier APIs, dont know that). Now all the scheduling where AMDs drivers fucked up is managed by the game itself, thats one of the reasons why AMD pushed the low level APIs so hard.

The differences are rather small, and the devs themself say that they still have a lot to learn with this rather new stuff. and after all the game is still in alpha.

My guess would be that newer AMD cards are better suited as primary cards (if that is even true) because AMD designed them with xDMA in mind while nvidia still relies on their SLI bridge.

This isn't too surprising all told - GCN is a monster under DX12 for a host of reasons (that don't have to include async compute) and its clear that GCN can be fed better by the cpu than maxwell can (hence why when the fury x is the primary card it does better than when the 980ti is). The 680 is clearly bottlenecking a 7970 as well.

tl;dr AMD stronk, Nvidia not so stronk.

I just built this guy and ran a FurMark Benchmark. Hitting consistent 78-80 FPS on the default 1080p test. Is that what should be expected pre-overclock? Want to make sure the card and everything are working properly.

Unigine Valley is a decent one. So is the free version of firestrike. Any demanding game that has a built in benchmark is also viable (like say, metro LL at max settings, or GTA V).

The article was about a sandboxy version of a pre-alpha version of the game that had multi GPU integration support as a showcase of what DX12 could do. There is very little incentive for them to continue wasting valuable development time, resources, and money on a feature that not even 1% of gamers would be able to use.

They'll at least insert self destructing code into drivers so when people crack and pirate them they will register they aren't genuine and fry the card
