Has smart errors but still werks. I back it up daily.

It won't really happen because hard drive technology is basically as advanced as it can get and it's not going to really improve any further. It is economically impractical to continue towards trying to increase the storage on rotating platters that are just fucking slow no matter what is done with the hardware compared to making devices that are:

a) thousands of times faster per transaction
b) capable of hundreds of thousands if not millions of transactions per second compared to hard drives with a few hundred at best and that won't improve
c) a relatively new technology with potential leaps and bounds in terms of performance as time passes vs hard drive technology that is 60+ years old now and no longer improving by comparison
d) more cost effective in terms of cooling and power consumption by a huge factor that is quite relevant as storage capacity becomes even more important as time passes

and many other reasons.

SSDs of any kind are just flat out better top to bottom and on every possible level in-between compared to hard drive technology.

If we get 10TB drives that's about as far as it's going to go, we won't be seeing anything really larger than that in the future. Companies that create hard drive technology are refocusing on the more profitable SSD side of storage because it offers hardly any negatives by comparison.

In my system:

1TB caviar Black, almost 4 years old still in perfect shape no errors or anything
2TB Toshiba, literally the cheapest 2tb drive I found, I have it for about 5 months, so far so good, it's actually a lot faster than my Black.

Also bunch of 40/80gb drives around the house, maxtors etc.

Buying expensive drives for 'better reliability' is a fucking joke as it will lead you in to a false sense of security. For the most part, all drives are equally reliable and every manufacturer has bad batches.

Had a Seagate Barracuda 2TB for 3+ years now. Never had any issues, it's still in perfect shape. Doesn't make any sound at all. I don't know why people on /g/ are such massive WD shills. Just get a Seagate Barracuda and don't waste your money on memes.

The WDs seem to last forever. Still have a 40 gig, the first drive i ever actualy bought new, and it still works (albeit with a few bad sectors)
Samsung 750g had bad sectors outta the box

No. Way back when (when 200gb was the biggest drive you could get) I put 4x 200g wds in a raid 10 for a customer, was sweet. Before that config, I installed them in a raid 0 at the shop just messing around. The read speeds were incredible for that time, and more space then I could dream of.

Nope, never. 75% of the drives I've seen purchased as refurbished have failed within the first 6 months of use. This goes for "white label" drives as well.

2 of the wd reds have over 10k hours and the other two are newer, closer to 1.5k hours I think. Never go above 30C. Bearing in mind they're in a small as much microserver case, 4 of them.

Is there an issue with having more than one volume on a raid5 array with 4 disks?

Have 4 disks in total and need 2 volumes roughly equal size. Is it just better to have 2 sets of raid1 or do raid 10 with 4 of them and have 2 volumes on it?

Apart from differences in read/write speed, which i'm not too concerned about, it all sort of ends up being quite similar right?

I've had two Seagate drives in my life. One 1TB drive I bought about 8 years ago, failed the next year, just outside of the warranty period.
The other, I got from a Dell about 10 years ago, It's still running solid today.

I primarily use WD though, good warranty and fairly reliable in my experience.

I've owned four Seagates and only one of them kicked the bucket after two years.
That said, they were all SATA 2 models running at 5400rpm, not 7200rpm. The higher speed HDDs just aren't as reliable.

Anyone know if SSHDs are more reliable than HDDs? What about their overall read/write performance?
Both WD Blue and Seaate 4TB hybrids are about the same price as a normal 4TB in the US.

both 160gb seagates i had years ago have failed
the 500GB samsung i bought to replace one is still kicking i believe
the 1TB seagate from my 2008 HP desktop still works, and works well
the 2TB i bought in 2011 or something still works well
all four 500GB WD Velociraptors i have work flawlessly, better than any other drive i've owned
nas and external in pic related are working well enough right now

My Cloud is ethernet only and has acceptable speeds for a networked drive. i can download outside of my LAN 4+mb/s and internally transfer 12mb/s. it is always on.
the external i believe goes to sleep but is connected to the NAS for backups.

Actually I consider the different firmwares a safety feature in my setup. Hardware failures don't bother me much in a RAID-1, but imagine shitty firmware taking out both of my drives at once!

Nothing can save you from a firmware bug.

That's SATA Express, not eSATA. eSATA's been around for years and is still better than USB 3.0 because a good portion of that 5 GB/s transfer speed is taken up by overhead. eSATA is constant 3 (or 6) GB/s regardless.

I've had some experience with external usb3 drives and the bandwidth and latency arewnt as good.

I have some 2bay usb3 enclosure and there are performance issues when the disks are both active. It is most likely some controller issue oer something. That mostly put me off the idea of having more than one disk attached to usb3.

My Toshiba is bretty gud. Avoid Seagate and then go for whatever has the longest warranty.

For some reason I think external drives have leass warranty than regular internal ones. Consider buying a drive with 5 year warranty and buying a cheap usb3 enclosure or something.

I don't even care anymore about total writes, just fuck my shit up. Using it for everything now in combo with two magnetic drives for backups.

I don't plan my SSD surviving my rig, only used <10TB of my total 72TB writes in 2 years usage.

Need to hurry up so it's dead in the next 3 years when it's warranty will end. If it fails before 72TB Samshit is forced to send me a new one.

Very similar in terms of sequential performance, I think between 150-160 when they're emtpy. I also believe both are 5700rpm drives so similar access times.

If you hang around I can post ATTO comparison, both drives are ~70% full so not completely accurate.
