Let's say you calculate the x and y coordinate every 10 milliseconds.
You could do as follows:

Point point;
while (true) {
point = new Point(calculateX(), calculateY());
sleepUntilNextTick();
}

Point point = new Point();

sleepUntilNextTick();
}

The 2nd will perform faster and produces less garbage. If you're interested in this topic, search for object pools.

Statelessness inside of a function is overkill.
As long as the state is self-contained within all functions that can be stateless you get all of the benefits of statelessness.
An imperative programming style, pure functions where possible and OOP to encapsulate any state that cannot be eliminated are a beautiful way to write good code.

You can't create and return a new function in C (like a capturing closure). Instead, you can emulate this behavior by defining structs and passing function pointers with known calling conventions (pass "environment" by pointer to first argument or whatever). It isn't easily composable easily, isn't type-safe (unless you are doing a very limited version), and isn't generic.

Working on a screencasting tool for Plan 9. Since Plan 9 has /dev/screen, the program will basically repeatedly copy /dev/screen as files in a given directory whose names are increasing numbers (i.e. frame numbers). Once recording is done, users can use one of Plan 9's lossless image encoders, like toppm or topng, to convert all of the frames to a format supported by some video encoder (like ffmpeg), then create a video from the frames.

The problem is that writing the frames to disk at the same time that recording is happening increases the chance that the write won't be done in time for the next frame to be copied (since reads and writes are happening at the same time and competing with each other). So my plan is to use a queue as a buffer to store frames, and only start writing the frames when the buffer is full. Once the recording is done, any remaining frames in the buffer will be written to the disk.

So the program will take as an argument the maximum length of the buffer, which will depend on the amount of memory the user has available or wants the program to use. I think that if the argument is omitted, I'll probably default to writing the frames immediately without a buffer.

It might not work well at all, but it's fun to do a Plan 9 project.

So I just made a program that summed a bunch of numbers in a for loop and I set my index high. Here's the program (after some modification, didn't save):

I find this very strange. Because I'm adding one every time so I'd expect it to add more than 1 to my numbers. The way I read this is:

a is assigned b+1 converted to float
b is assigned a converted to int

Unless I'm too tired atm this should be adding 1 every time through the loop to both numbers. I've considered some sort of maximum value on these but online resources tells me that 21 million is well within the bounds for integer and float types. Making i and b unsigned doesn't change anything either. I've tried inspecting the values and on the line where it says a= (float)(b+1) it doesn't add anything. I don't get it.

So what's going on?

They're a simple part of the langauge. K&R, if I recall correctly, takes less than a page to explain them fully, including some properties I didn't know after years of using C. They don't require a book.

And it doesn't seem to have a specific limit it just happens occasionally.
For instance if I put in 2144472060
it'l go to 2144472064.

I'm working on creating a bunch of sorts in c++ that take array inputs

So far I've gotten down insertionsort, mergesort, and a quicksort working fine. Now I'm trying to use a quicksort that uses median3 to select its pivot

Attached is a ss of my current code of median3 and it's results. Trouble is, the results after median 3 given the array input should be 0 8 9.

I understand after I can get the median3 to select the proper values in sorted order I can set a pivot inside my quicksort function to be arr[end-1].

Some insight towards the right direction is greatly appreciated.

All of this only effects the look and ease of use in a word processor. All these things do nothing but cause problems and shit up pure ASCII text processing.

i know multiple graduate research students who have attempted sophisticated systems in Haskell that suffered from severe performance problems, most of which originated in Haskell's libraries. Haskell is supposed to achieve parallelism by data pipe parallelization, a la MapReduce. the problem is that MapReduce already exists, along with about a million other parallel pipe frameworks, all of which are implemented in higher-performance languages (mostly C++). so if you ACTUALLY have a massive MapReduce problem you will not implement it in Haskell, you will just pass it to Hadoop. even C++ std:: implements fully parallel higher-order map, etc. (via gnu_parallel)

with easier parallel problems, e.g. boring actor shit, the entire theory of how to handle such problems is based on objects with mutable state (communicating by message passing or w/e). again, not easy in Haskell

If I were to see -just- these names, I wouldn't know if they're a FILE * or a file descriptor. I think my name both accurately and concisely describes it.

The rest don't really save you but 2 characters, which is a really dumb optimization. If you sent in a patch for my program changing all instances of chunksize to "chunksz", I would laugh at you. Changing nread to n is an error because you lose valuable information. I'm okay with changing errorcode to err however.

That's getting verbose because it doesn't really make sense for an "nread = 1" to mean 1 gigabyte of data read. If it really did mean gigabytes, that's weird, and then that's where you would use a comment. nread meaning bytes is not weird, so it doesn't need to be qualified further.

If they were object members then that information is already implicitly included in the type. It is redundant to include them in the name as well.

It's weird that I literally never have these problems working in "high level" languages. But I can't actually put my finger on why. I think it is that compositional programming is stylistically discouraged in C. I know when I wrote an embedded app for a zilog microcontroller I used some of this style, well-aided by literate programming tools, and it still just felt weird even though it's the most natural thing in other languages.

a GPU is specialized hardware for exactly this problem. NVIDIA manufactures ~$6000 GPUs that are intended for linear algebra HPC and will never draw an actual graphics buffer. every HPC installation i'm aware of is now installing massive numbers of these sci-comp GPUs

there still needs to be some software because it's *abstract* linear algebra, not numeric. software needs to reify the abstraction
