960 or fury x for same price?

The last part was true 5 years ago, and is still true if you're unironically gaming on Linux, but otherwise, they're both fine, with AMD being better at not gimping old cards (see Keplar).
If nothing else, the Fury X is much more powerful, so absolutely get it for the same price.

also i do dual-boot linux and windows, but if i use the 960 i'd run nouveau (all kernel software should be open, only userspace is ok to be closed). how does nouveau compare to open source AMD drivers (radeon/amdgpu)? i only run linux about 15% of the time so it's not a big deal.

The fury x competes with the 980 ti. It is better than the 960, 970 and the 980. Get the fury x.

The fury X does not run hotter than the 960.
The 960 is so much worse than the fury X (the fury X is just below the 980Ti for christ's sake) that you'd be stupid to get the 960 over a fury.

The fury does eat a lot more electricity, but if you're in a poor country electricity is probably cheap.

This LITERALLY only affected pre-mass produced cards. If you've got a revision 2 pump, there's NO issue because coil whine was fixed at the same time.
That's from my experience and the experience of people I know online who have Fury X, at least.
