I have a desktop computer that has integrated Intel GMA X4500 graphics.

Can I just buy a new graphics card and be able to play games, or do I need a whole new computer for some reason?

Depends on what processor it has if would be a worthwhile upgrade. Generally you can throw a GTX 750 Ti into anything without worrying about the power supply. It might be severely bottle necked depending on your processor and amount of RAM.

You have one PCIe x16 slot. It could take a good graphic card. BUT, you also must have strong enough power supply to support the new graphic cards needs.
If your power supply is 500w you can. Less is questionable.
