I don't even play games for fun, but just because I can really pretend to be someone else.
Regardless if i'm a plumber searching for a princess, or i'm a trained marine, as long as i'm not me.
I like to play games to pretend I matter to people, where people are counting on me to do something important.
And if i fail, i just try again.
And someone is always going to want to talk to me.
And sometimes
If i focus hard enough

Nothing wrong with a bit of escape or fantasy for recreation. Some people find it in books, television, movies, etc. It's only a problem if that's all you ever do. Which is a problem of life balance, not the medium of video games.

Young children play games to explore social roles and psychological stimuli. So do adults. The only difference is that as adults were much more sure of the stories and stimuli that we like. It releases dopamine in the brain and works as a risk-reward system without risk. Its an artifact of the domestication of humanity that has hurt us as much as it's helped us.
