There are a few actual non-meme reasons:

1. Apple is a walled off garden. If you want an OSX computer you MUST buy apple. So if you end up liking OSX then your choices are either:
-Buy a mac
-Hackintosh where it may or may not be as good due to drivers
-Hackintosh on a laptop, good fucking luck with drivers even worse than desktop

2. Apple build quality is the best, this is honestly not an arguable point. It's the highest build quality, the only company that might be able to realistically compete would be a company that doesn't produce many different styles of computers such as possibly Microsoft although as you said SP1 is like 1/5th its value after just a few years. Even computers like the XPS and ASUS ones are still not quite there build quality wise nor do I expect a company that produces 50 different laptop models a year to spend as much time on one as Apple does.

5. It just werks, and that's not a meme. It's so rare to ever see Apple skimp on a wifi chip (Such as microsoft did) or some battery technology just to save a few $. Their profit margins are so high that they can basically spend all their time on making sure every part works rather than trying to make 1% profit by cutting out battery.

A macbook is generally a lot more trustable than other laptop brands. Like I'd be willing to pay more for a used pair of redwings or a thinkpad because I can trust that I'll get a good, working product. I wouldn't pay much for a used dell unless it's refurbished w/ return policy
Macbook's are a "luxury" commodity, and more importantly viewed as such, meaning they don't follow the supply/demand curve as closely. Being expensive is at least part of the value, though not the only part. And again, it's targeted at the relatively wealthy who aren't so price-sensitive, because they don't have to be (because they have enough wealth that $2k isn't a MAJOR purchase)

Most majors have their software readily available on the mac. It's unix, so it has access to mostly every linux-tool, satisfying the needs of non-industrial special-case academic needs. It's got all the core writing tools, since writing is both a popular and relatively simple task. Mac's are also big in the audio and film industries, and has a number of products specifically targeted there. CS/EE is also mostly satisfied by the unix aspect, and I'm not sure about hard-core mathematics but I can't imagine it having anything less than a significant open source community.

Really, I think the only academic software windows fully has a handle on is CAD, animation, and school required software (though in my experience, there is a *nix replacement that would be just as valid). Like CS often defaults their "guides" to windows, but there's always equivalent software on *nix.

the only ones that come to mind are lunchbox thinkpads, but they obviously serve a different market of design than macbooks do (thick, heavy, durable, reliable and modifiable versus tightly integrated, thin, clean and simple)
The surface pro is also quite nice, though the new book is ugly as all hell, but it's built on assumptions of how windows would behave, and the software simply failed to meet those assumptions. (touchscreen integration is mostly crap, window scaling apis couldn't consistently support high resolutions [because they kept shitting out new apis so all older software doesn't scale correctly], metro ecosystem is entirely dead).

Really the thing that macbooks blow everything out of the water in tho is that fuckin trackpad

Macs just age more gracefully.

How many off-the-shelf Windows computers from 2008/2009 would you trust to be able to run Windows 10? The manufacturers probably don't even offer the proper drivers. Meanwhile, you can buy a Mac from 2009 that's guaranteed to run El Cap, and run it well.

I'm not >>51030651 but...

Apple's overall quality is really nice. If you were to spend the same amount of money on a Macbook towards a Windows laptop, sure it will probably have higher specs and what not depending on what you are going for but something about it is going to feel like shit.

MacBooks have amazing battery life, high res displays that are colour accurate, has Thunderbolt 2 ports and a bunch of other stuff. Try to find a laptop that tries to replicate it and does better at the same price point. Hint: you can't.

Trackpad is one of them, like shit man. I just got a MacBook recently because I just wanted to try it out. The trackpad is basically god tier. Every other Windows laptop trackpad I've used extensively sucks ass, so much that I just want to pull my hair out and just use a physical mouse and bring it around with me all the time.

Colour accurate displays is another. Why the fuck do people in art use MacBooks and Apple stuff? Because their displays are colour accurate and calibrated. That's why. That's actually important in a lot of art-related fields such as photography.Imagine editing a photo with a shitty display. Fuck that shit.

Battery life is another. Like shit son, have you used MacBooks? Their battery life is hilariously amazing. I thought 5 hours was a lot. Try 9.

The new Dell XPS 13 and 15 with the updated Skylake CPUs came out recently so I'm planning on giving them a shot. But fuck man, Apple did good on the trackpad. It's not shit. It feels great to use and everything.

When Microsoft released the SP2/SP3/SP4 they always bring out "improvements" to the device which make the previous device seem inferior like having better stylus/screen integration, ruins the value of the last gen.

In addition because Windows/Android sells themselves as technological goods, they have rapidly decreasing value. Consumer see value Windows/Android devices from their technology in short time. Microsoft's surface book cannot maintain their price if there is something better in the market. Because Android/Window disposable commodity, is little reason why you would buy used broken short term lasting products

Apple is in it's own separate niche market that sells everything as a brand like Coke. Apple treats as a brand, and solution rather then a technological company. This allows Apple to avoid deprecating value of being a tech company. Because Apple created their own OS, they have no competition or reason to lower their price. Because their services and products have no equal, consumers accept those prices.

TL:DR Apple sells itself as a status symbol in special niche market that they have no equal competition which stops devaluation of their products. Microsoft/Google require their software to be sold to everybody, otherwise their business implodes.

I've had a lot of computers that just shit themselves within a couple years and you better believe that if I had a grand to blow, I would spend it on a laptop that's gonna last for a long time (e.g. Apple or high end business laptop) instead of saving money and getting a burner to last until the next hardware refresh. It's not like using the extra money to get better specs is worth it past a certain point since if you are doing intensive work on a laptop it is probably connected to a remote machine
