Any good book about PIC Microcontrollers? preferably about the 16F family. Also General PIC thread. Have you ever programmed for a PIC microcontroller? What have u done? if not...what the fuck are you waiting for?

i'm more of an msp430 guy myself, but i would recommend finding examples or projects that other people have done and learning form them if you already have a basic understanding of embedded programming

I have a bunch of 8051 based chips and i have to say, they're really easy to program.
Can you recommend a good book to learn AVR programming in C?

I'm a first year electronics engineering student and there are a lot of terms I don't fully understand. I did lots googling and I'm still quite confused.

Can someone explain some terms and how they relate to each other? PIC microcontroller, FPGA prototyping, VHDL, Verilog.

What are the difference between and would you compare ARM, AVR, mBed and Arduino?

I'll have to soon choose my courses and it feels like I'm totally in the dark.

Only good thing about AVR is that there's tons of FOSS software for it and lots of noob-friendly guides.

Anyway, anyone ever used the propeller mcu? Sounds really neat, though I can't think of a use for it where a cheaper conventional mcu or an fpga wouldn't be better suited for.

fpga is programmable hardware. i.e. you tell the nand gates how to arrange themselves i.e. Switch to LED

Verilog, VHDL (and in my case lucid) are HDL (hardware description language), just the syntax.

Thanks, that clears things out quite a bit. I understood that PIC and ARM use assembly, so does mBed and Arduino but through a compiler?

I'm going to try out FPGA on my own, are there any cheap kits you can recommend? Also, are there big differences between Verilog, VHDL and Lucid?

mBed and Arduino typically use C++. C and C++ are more common than assembly for modern embedded programming.

The only FPGAs I can recommend are the Lattice iCE40 FPGAs support by Project Icestorm, because that is the only Free Software toolchain:

Not sure if you're aware or not, but "assembly" doesn't refer to a specific programming language.

Assembly code is the individual instructions given to the processor. Each architecture will have it's own set of instructions, called an ISA. PIC has it's own ISA, MIPS has it's own ISA, x_86, ARM etc...

A compiler is used to take C code and output a sequence of instructions for whichever ISA is the compilation target. So when you compile C to run on your desktop you compile for x_86. When you want to flash the microprocessor you would compile for ARM or PIC or whatever.

No, that's machine language.
Assembler can contain shit like pseudo-instructions, macros, some helpful automatic unit conversions, etc.

If you define "assembly" purely as the instructions in human readable form then what I said is true.

Certain assemblers having the capability to define macros and optimize pseudo-ops and so on doesn't make assembly at it's very basic level anything other than human readable machine instructions.

This is just arguing semantics though
