Anyone here attempted to use batteries to power a PC using a pico-PSU? I'm thinking of using either a HDPLEX 250W

The PSUs use 16-24V and 12V input respectively, and while I can find batteries with the correct voltages, none can output enough amps. Can I put batteries in parallel to get the right amperage or does it not work that way?

16-24V input range makes finding batteries easy, you could use 6S lipo packs, or even a pair of car batteries if it can handle up to ~27V which I suspect it can.

Cool, thanks. How do I know what sort of amperage the batteries need to be though? The PC will be just an AMD 7870k in a mini-ITX board if that changes anything.

Has a rating of 10 Ahours and a constant discharge rating of 10C. I'm told this means I could safely draw 100 amps continuously from the battery? If so that should be plenty for what I'm trying to accomplish.

22 volts, ten amp-hours means it can give you ten amps of 22 volts (or 220 watts) for one hour.

Also yeah, you can flatten it in six minutes, that's what 10C means. But that's certain to not be good for it. Batteries last longer the gentler you charge and discharge them.

I figured that would be the case. I doubt the system I'm building would draw anywhere near 100 amps though. Is there any way I can estimate how many amps the computer will draw? Again, it'll be an AMD APU in a mini-ITX board, so I'm guessing amperage will be very low, under 10 amps I'm hoping.

Battery voltage is not static.
It changes depending on charge(which is how you know how full it is)
You need a variable input range or convert that battery input to a static output.

Indeed, that's why I'm leaning towards the HDPlex PSU, as it can accept anywhere from 16 to 24 volts.

Interesting. With that being said, I'd get at very least 30 minutes of running time? That should just work for my application, and if not, I can always opt for the 16000mAh version of the same battery for more run time. Thanks so much for the help and info guys.

Look into rechargeable Li-Ion cells like these. You can get >40a individual cells, even.

Building a regulated "Pack" that can be swapped in and out is not difficult. Include a charging circuit, and enjoy.

Try to find something less than 131 watts, that seems high for what is presumably some kind of portable machine.
If you don't absolutely need performance, consider something like an Atom server SoC board. You still get PCIe and all the usual desktop amenities.

depending of the voltage of your batteries this will mean
8.7 amps @ 16 V
5.8 Amps @ 24 V

and yes you can put batteries in parallel which will give you twice the amount of current you can pull
