The 970 DOES have 4Gb of vram though, it's just that the last 0.5GB is slower.

it was either 3Gb, or 3.5+0.5GB, at least this way you're getting an extra Gb of vram.

970 is a great card for the price, can be overclocked far higher than r9 390 performance, and will still consume less power and generate less heat than a stock 390.

The newest driver updates seem to drop a few frames on average, definitely not an optimal update, but nothing really catastrophic as tech news goes.

And even with the "shitty drivers" I hear so much about the 390 is still blowing out the 970 as the best high end card for most budgets. So, when we get more drivers updates that aren't supposedly shitty is the gap going to widen even more? This kind of looks bad for nvidia in that sense.

The drivers aren't actually shitty by the way, AMD's software is just about equally as problematic as nvidia's these days, and less so in my personal experience.

This isn't on the same scale as 3.5, or the fact that nvidia still isn't looking good when it comes to taking advantage of DX12.

Maxwell overclocks like a champ.
And it won't get as warm or pull as much power as a 390, especially if you overclock the 390.

390 at stock is a little faster, but uses a lot more power and can't overclock as much.
I'd recommend the 390 though, if your budget won't allow a 970.

Yeah that is also what I took in consideration when making my choice. It's hot as FUCK here throughout all the year no matter what and I remember watching a comparison video between both from Digital Foundry IIRC and they replied to one of the comments saying you could literally feel the heat emanating from the 390 testbench as opposed to the 970's. Oh and also Shadowplay, I actually like it and use it a lot.

GCN and Maxwell are completely different architectures
You cannot compare clock speeds in a trivial manner.

Maxwell (and Kepler to a lesser extent) clocks very high by comparison but gets less of a relative increase per clock compared to GCN 1.1/1.2

With that said, it appears that Maxwell's higher clocking headroom beats this relative equalization out. Although you would be wise to totally throw out any of Nvidia's power draw ratings (a 1450/1900 970 can pull over 220 watts)

GCN 1.1/1.2 has nearly linear scaling until you hit those mega clocks that start setting world records. A 20% core clock will see around 18% performance increase, for example. Though fury has some odd behaviour with absurd scaling at times (though naturally it doesn't clock high right now, but scales insanely well with what little can be squeezed).

I'm about to buy a new GPU, but I'm a cheapskate and I don't want it to surpass 150 bucks.

The issue is, at the left side I have Nvidia and every single GPU I bought in the past by Nvidia broke within a year except for one which has surpassed temperatures of 100c

And at the right side I have AMD, which has terrible drivers half of the time and is semi shitty on Linux.

So I'm having trouble here finding a decent GPU that will manage at least to play current gen games at consistent fps (even if lower tan 60), at 1080p and with medium graphic settings. Sure, a console would be easier but it's eventually more expensive plus my computer would eventually die anyways.

You can get some really amazing deals in the used market m8.
I got an i3 2120+ 8gb ram + mobo for $100.
Found a hd 7870 for $90.
Add a new $60 psu, $40 case, $70 1tb hdd. (aus prices)

That's $360 for a nice budget gaming pc.

You just gotta keep looking and grab a good deal when you see one.

I might even upgrade to an i5 in a year or so, but the i3 works pretty good for bf4, which is pretty much all I play.

OCs to 1500 on core (haven't tried pushing mem), stays under 70deg at all times. Handles everything I throw at it at 1440p just fine.

Unless AMD pulls something amazing out their ass at some point, I'm sticking with Nvidia.

Maxwell can overclock significantly in terms of pure clockspeed as well as overall effectiveness. That's why overclocked 970s and 980s are really powerful. That doesn't mean that a 50 Mhz OC on a GCN card is worthless. These two concepts are mutually exclusive because we're talking about different GPU architectures. Both things can be true.

I had two AMDs so far, a HD3650 mobility, and a 7870.

The 3650 had driver issues on all platforms, was hot like shit, and performance wise, it was shit.

The 7870 is OK with drivers, though the linux/bsd drivers suck ass. There is no physx or gameworks which is featured in almost all the major games and they look cool and awesome.
And of course there is no CUDA.

tl;dr: Buying AMD is a buyers remorse for me, never again.
