Because the description of browns is very misleading.

Because clears are harder to find.
Browns are found on a lot of cheap boards.

People like clears because they're much more tactile. Calling browns tactile is just a disgrace, they're tactile for about 25% of their total travel and even then the tactile bump is tiny.

imagine if there was a keyboard that used magnets instead of springs

it would work via magnet repelling

you would never need to desolder a switch to change the spring

all you would need to do is slide out some plate like toaster crumb tray and change the magnet at the top of the switch housing

no more stuck springs

possibility of being more water resistant than springs, because no springs

customization would be easy. the only hard part would be sourcing your magnets

of course, it would still have cherry mx compatible stems

Impossible without spring assistance. When repelling magnets are in perfect equilibrium (assuming top magnet is levitating), applying outside force will not cause it to depress because Newton's 3rd law.

Theoretically, how your method would work best would be to have a layer under the pcb with springs and RE magnets with the repelling magnets above the pcb held in place with a plate. The top magnet would connect the circuit for a keypress on depression and the spring would compress and reset the system when released. The biggest issue would be a thick board to hold the bottom layer unless someone with more than highschool physics knowledge could bother to correct me

Nah m8, this thing is my baby now. The whole selling point of these was durability anyway. I probably won't need another board for a long long time unless we switch to some new thing over USB or PS/2 (I use mine in PS/2 btw)

Depends on the switch and how hard/fast you type. I've got a coworker with mx black switches that types so hard that's noiser than another guy with mx blues.

Depends what kind of sensation your fingers crave.

A "clicky" Cherry type switch is designed to make noise, and they can get reasonable noisy.

Even a setup with MX Reds on a steel mounting plate is rather noisy.

Buckling springs even more so.

But you could also go the other way, get o-rings to dampen the "clack", etc..

Also, it's going to depends on your typing style. You might be louder for a while if you're coming from rubber domes, because you have likely built up a forceful hammering technique from years of typing on worn-out, mushy gummy bears.

The heavier switch types can help a bit if you bottom out a lot. In addition to creating some extra cushioning they also tire you out more so you'll learn to type lightly.

Also, green is not the only heavy switch.
Green is a heavy blue (clicky), clear is a heavy brown (tactile) and black is a heavy red (linear).

Mostly depends on how hard you mash your keys and the switch type

Linears can be the most silent PROVIDED you don't smash your keys. When you learn how to not bottom out they are about as quiet as "quiet" rubberdomes.

Heavier switches such as Clears and Blacks are harder to bottom out so there's that for quiet switches

The difference in feeling is only because bottoming out happens when the rubber dome is still mid-resistance, the plastic stem is bottoming out first. That's why you need to dental band it, but not the plain rubber dome.

I've been wanting to try a Buckling Spring to at least see how it feels, though I would be a bit annoyed by 2KRO if I were to want to adopt one as my main board. Part of me also wonders if I'd like a Hi-Pro board with transplanted 55g switches.

Can't say I've tried it. However, I would recommend it over the Novatouch for the extra build and keycap quality. If you want to replace the keycaps though with something of your own liking, I'd suggest the Novatouch for the MX compability.

Arguably even more important though is the switch weight.
The Novatouch is available only as a uniform 45g.
The RealForce 87U (TKL) is available in varied weights (30/45/55 with pinky keys being lighter, etc), uniform 45, or uniform 55.
The full sized 104U is only available in the variable weight, or in uniform 45g if you get the expensive High Profile model.

Personally I've only tried my 55g switches on Topre. Most people seem to prefer them, but it's up to you. 45g is less fatiguing, 55g is more satisfying, and variable is... well I've never heard someone liking variable now that I think about it, but I haven't looked too hard.

I think you've gone over the deep end a bit. On the one hand with mechanical keyboards there's improved funtionality but then with novelty keycaps, lights and fancy looking usb cables you're in an anime autist virgin loser netherworld where you've completely lost the plot.

Gaterons should be cheaper not more expensive than cherrys.

I'd much rather see a self-contained topre or bluetooth module than a single other unuseable $50 toy keycap.

That keyboard is a Preonic which is a larger version of the Planck. Both are from Ortholinear Keyboards which just recently tried hooking up a bluetooth (no usb cord) to their pcb.

I love what OrthoLinear are doing with inexpensive and customizable components but it all seems a little up in the air right now. I wouldn't get a Planck because the current milled bottom case, which isn't available until December, probably won't accomodate a bluetooth unit.

If they offer either a Preonic or Planck with the wooden sides or milled bottom that can accomodate bluetooth and they actually have it in stock I'll buy one instantly and wire it myself. They don't really have a a product fully executed yet and they're on to version 2 already?

Gon's keyboards have a great GUI to customize your board but their product range changes up so much and their cases look cheap.

Not sure about the capacitive actuation part. Currently I'm just thinking of using the same actuation mechanism that it had on the original keyboard and putting springs under the domes.

And then some kind of slider on top, not sure about that part yet.

Recently bought a Pok3r and I love it, but whenever I press the left control it toggles the brightness of the LEDs behind the caps lock key and space bar.

Just got my new 87U 55g

Holy tits, this feels fantastic. Looks like I might need to make my FC660C my office keyboard now.

The only complaints I can make about it so far are the modifiers' font, the bubbled Super with the Windows logo, and the ABS space bar.

Being black text on black caps, the font is hardly an issue and the space bar actually feels really nice for ABS.

Looks like I need to start hunting for a PBT space bar and two replacement keys for the Super key.

Oh I almost forgot, the feet aren't padded like they are with my FC660C.

It's not really slippery or anything, but I am kinda disappointed by that to be honest. I'll have to look into making my own or just buying a large mouse pad.

Admittedly, there were a few adjustments to be made. R-win key to Fn for stuff like Num Lock, Insert, etc., just so it has all the functionality of a contemporary keyboard. Find something to put above the numpad. Maybe indicator lights, although it's always going to be Num Lock on, Caps Lock off, Scroll Lock off, so I don't need to know that information.

Kill the right shift which no one has ever used, move the up arrow over the right arrow, put the / where it belongs, and put the pipe/backslash key next to it. It will be the wrong profile with any contoured set though.

ABS is honestly fine if you're a civilized adult.
Neckbear NEETs who consume nothing but pizza rolls and Coca-cola while they "program" and play MMOs for 13 hours a day claim that ABS will fade and shine, meanwhile their sweaty, grimy, dorito dust covered fingers act like a sort of wet sandpaper.
I spend an average amount of time at my computer and spend and average amount of time typing. I keep my desk area and my person clean, meaning I don't eat over my keyboard, and I wash my hands after meals, using the bathroom, etc. I've used ABS my entire life and never had a problem with "shine". I thought the whole ABS thing was a meme when mechanical keyboard threads started popping up because I'd never heard of anyone having a problem like that before.
Maybe doubleshot PBT is objectively more resistant to wear than printed ABS, who knows. All I know is, unless you're a disgusting fatshit who secretes corrosive acid from his fingertips, the difference won't matter to you.

Im not really into SPs texture too much. Its all right. Not even comparable to Cherrys ABS IMO. Taihao PBTs I dont like as much as either though. Thickness and texture matters most to me. But yeah stock keycap ABS for the major companies is completely terrible beyond anything.

Get a linear switch like reds or blacks which, contrary to popular belief, are pretty comfy and silent for typing unless you're a hambeast who smashes his keyboard and bottoms out all the time

If you want tactile, don't fall for the browns meme like many of the scrubs here and get clears, as browns feel like mushy shit while clears are tactile all the way

Avoid keyboards marketed as gaymen keyboards especially from Razer and Corsair because apart from the obnoxious rice, they have massive QC issues. Get Ducky or Filco for best quality for buck

Massdrop is frequently a good place for keyboard stuff. Make sure to avoid Tai-Hao or whatever for sure, they make REALLY low quality caps. Try to get Vortex if you can. I think they're the only ones who've made doubleshot PBT.

Kind of what I'm looking for. I like the Blues, and I hate edgy gamer bullshit and LED keyboard lighting. The only other keyboards I've been considering are Das Keyboard (dat volume knob), which I think is a bit pricey, and the Coolermaster CM Storm because it's cheap. The WASD on Massdrop is only $25 more than the Coolermaster.

Anybody have thoughts on O-rings for sound dampening? Thinking of getting some 2mm O-rings to be a courteous neighbor...

I should elaborate, I'm looking for something tactile, loud, easy to "double tap" with, and firm, yet smooth.

To give you an idea, two of my fave non-mech keyboards are the Dell Quietkey (quite the ironic name, heh), and the Logitech K360. Even though the latter is a chiclet keyboard, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is to type on.

There honestly isn't a whole lot. Most of your options are TKL's or 60%'s
You could go with a ducky, but that is a big price difference.
There is the KUL, but that's a TKL and also uses cherry stabs (i'm not a fan)
The cm storm should be fine if you pick up some nice key caps for it.

It's technically less effort physically, and remembering actuation from muscle memory just comes naturally after a few hours. Less physical effort means it's easier to type for long periods of time.

I can understand liking clicks and bumps. They do sound glorious and feel nice.

But to me, nothing beats light and linear.
Even topre so far, but I've only tried uniform 55g on a friend's board. Maybe 30g might be light enough to feel as glorious as everyone says they do.

I didn't say it was a hassle, just wondering if anyone happened to know. It's not like MD is that expensive, and you are right that I intend to get PBT keycaps sometime in the future regardless of which board I get. In that regard, the WASD V2 would actually be the cheapest overall if I got it without keycaps, as you suggest.

As for ANSI, it's what I'm used to using from living in the states, and I prefer it aesthetically. ISO is certainly not a dealbreaker, though.

In fact, the Ducky is very tempting. However, it also seems a bit silly to get a keyboard with fancy backlighting that I don't really want or need. It also happens to be the "white edition," whose case (I fear) might start to look dirty over time.

I've used ISO all my life and actually switched to ANSI with my current keyboard (a Ducky Shine 4 with Clears). Got some Vortex translucent doubleshot PBT caps just today, I don't regret switching one bit.
