But seriously, fuck your 390 AMD fanboys. Both the 970 and 390 are 1080p cards, your 4.5 gb of extra VRAM wont do shit in 1080p. As for overall performance, I've seen a difference of 5 fps compared to the 970. Not to mention the constant roaring from the fans spinning faster than the propellers of a helicopter trying to get the temps under 90 degrees. Meanwhile I can slap the 970 in a pc with a 500w psu and have it run just as well, and can also OC it to outperform the 390, while still getting cool temps. So instead of upgrading my old, OLD PC, I thought I'd start fresh. What do you think of this for Fallout 4 and Battlefront?

I've got a few thousand Dollarydoos to spend and nothing else but a new PC much be spent on it. I really don't have anything else to spend it on anyway.

Overkill. The motherboard is shit, you don't really need to spend so much on the CPU either. Just go for a 4790K i7 instead. You're also gonna need more power with your PSU. But hey.. if you wanna shit out all of that money on overkill/shit components then be my guest. Best thing about the buils is the 980 Ti and the SSD. One boot/applications SSD and one for vidya. I'm running out on my current 120GB and 180GB SSDs.

Mostly for mass, media and rapid archive. I already run a 12TB NAS at home (actually for my neighbours as well) so I just want something for myself.

On top of the SSD solution - I was going to suggest a M.2 based Samsung 950 Pro if you still wanted 'fast SSD' and the 512GB storage - but according to EVGA's spec sheet the 'Stinger' only has an 'E' keyed M.2 slot, not the M key that the 950 uses.

Dump the CPU water cooler for an air cooler and get a GPU with built-in AIO.

Water cooling your GPU is the difference between 50°c and 38db at full load vs 85°c and 40db+ of noise on air.
Meanwhile, your temps will get only slightly better going with water on CPU, except AIOs tend to be louder.

it's okay but a bit too expensive, also a 600W PSU would be barely scrapping by with a 390 so I recommend a GTX 970 instead, it really depends on then PSU quality.

The 390 is a just a few FPS ahead and in most games they are on par, you can still overclock the 970 to 980 levels and still use less power than the 390, pretty much any EVGA or gigabyte 970 can overclock that high while the 390 only the MSI one is know to overclock well and only if you are lucky.

The card can use 3778mb at full speed, the drivers will prevent the card from using the last remaining 256mb, all those "benchmarks" and stuff you see where the card completely fails are done at 4K with ridiculous amount of anti aliasing added, even without the "vram problem" the card would still fail because it lacks the power to power such high resolution with AA.
256mb of vram is nothing to fret, even the 3GB 780Ti is still above the 970(as it should) in most games even those who use more than 3GB of VRAM like GTA V, no to mention GTA V uses the full 3.7GB of the 970 without problems.

The problem with 970 isn't that it has 3.5 GB of VRAM usable at full speed, it's that games see it as having 4 GB of VRAM and act accordingly(since unused RAM is wasted RAM). This can sometimes cause stuttering when (some)games try to use the last 512MB and the effective bandwidth suffers massively(since 970 can't access both partitions simultaneously). The problem with 970 is not that it's a 3.5 GB card, it's that Nvidia decided to lie to the customers and sell it as a 4 GB card.

I'm really shooting for the red and black theme, and assuming storage is already accounted for, I haven't added that into the part list.
I want to play current gen gaymes without needing to overhaul for future gen, along with some video editing down the line.
Should I not use a H100i? Did I fall for the meme? Will probablychange the case to an H440 seeing as though they do basically the same thing, but again the theme is red+black and i'm not sure if the blue NZXT led on the H440 is able to be changed.

And if you can afford it get a 980, it's worth the difference. I have a 970 myself and it's just not enough to get the all maxed 60+ fps experience. And as I'm trying to achieve 144fps, it's literally one step too low. And SLI 970 has too much power for 3,5+0,5 vram, so a 980 is a lot better, even though it is more expensive too. SLI 980 would also last at least 1-2 years more than SLI 970.
Tfw overpriced ram. HyperX Fury ram is IMO a lot better for the price.

as for everyone telling you do ditch the 970, know that there is always a better card out there, and in < 1 year the 980ti will be shit tier.
unless you want to play 4k games right now, and you have a 4k monitor to REALLY play at max res, a 970 will run great frame rate at very high to max for all games.

I paid 350 last year for an upgraded 970, before the 390 even existed.

CPU: Get an unlocked i5 if you have more money get an unlocked i7.
Motherboard: If you have an unlocked processor pick a mid range priced card with good reviews that allows OC. If not generally go for the near cheapest one you can find that allows all your shit to be placed on it(i.e. H97).
RAM: Cheapest sticks of ram you can find that are DDR3 1600+ or DDR4 2133+. Generally no need for more than 8.
Cooling: Only air, from cheapest to the most expensive: 212 evo<Cryorig H7<Noctua
GPU: 380<390<980 Ti< 980 Ti SLI
SSD: Samsung EVO or Crucial BX, Samsung 950 PRO (M.2) or Intel 750 (Pci-E). Last two if rich
HDD: Go WD or Hitachi
Case: NZXT, Fractal Design, Phanteks. Chose one that fits your price range.
PSU: For a single GPU config you will never need more than 600W of power. For dual 980Ti a 850W EVGA is fine.

Given this base core components that i listed above. Say you got the cheapest i recommended, like unlocked i5, 8gb of ram, 390 and so on and you have more money to spend. This is the order of priority where it should get invested for that dere 144 fps in Fallout or w/e.

GPU>CPU>RAM(Just the ammount, nothing else)>MB>PSU>SSD>HDD>Cooling>Case

If you want to downgrade from the general norm. Start being a cheapskate using the order above but in reverse. So go for a cheaper case then give up on the cooling, minimum storage HDD, give up on the SSD and so on.

Why is it so difficult for you people to wrap your head around this shit. Wish a mod could sticky this or if it can be added to the sticky as a simplified version of build your PC for retards.

CPU - Decent enough. Consider if it is worth upgrading to the i7 for you or not. I usually do because I keep my systems for awhile and my uses it helps with multitask and the like.
Cooler - Get the H100i GTX instead. Its newer. Otherwise, if you cna handle 140MM fan rads, get the H110i GTX. The GTX version is newer, better block. Though if yo uwant the best AIO cooler, Swiftech H220-X or H240-X.
RAM - No no no. I'd say go for 16GB, but even if you don't, at least get a single 8GB stick, not 2x 4gb sticks.
SSD - Why do you have 2 SSDs? Keep the M.2 ifor speed. Get another smaller SSD if you need another drive for speed, but if you need storage, get a large capacity HDD insteaad.
GPU - No complaints. Oh, if you like MSI, they have a version with a built-in Corsair waterblock cooling a GTX 980 Ti.
Case - Decent enough, but I'd go for one of their Obsidian cases. 750D is lots of space/features for the money.
PSU - Good one. If you intend to add lots of other storage and/or GPUs, then get the same kind of Corsair, but go for 1000w or better.

Don't just look at the pure wattage of the PSU. You have to look at the amps it draws from the 12V+ rail. Most PSUs don't draw enough current to power the R9 295x2 even if they have sufficient wattage.

Single threaded performance from intel has been so good since Sandy Bridge that it almost doesn't matter at this point that Skylake is incrementally better than Haswell in that regard.
