I went out a while ago and brought a cheap ASUS laptop with 4gb ram and 1.86GHz processor. Unsurprisingly its pretty shit and after about a year it sluggish with basic processes like internet browsing with a lot of tabs open.

What is the bare minimum stats I need in a laptop to have flawless long term performance for things like heavy internet usage and basic gaming (aoe2 online etc..)?

Basically I don't want to ever wait a second while I open a new tab or program or whatever.

Could you post the exact model that you've got?

For AoE2 and browsing you should do just fine with what you've got.
If you want B L A Z I N G fast performance, consider getting a SSD

My moms celeron laptop was like that too but now she regularly cleans it with ccleaner and defrags it and it runs great.

Currently I'm on an HP laptop from 2012 and it holds up perfectly.

I'm using a €400 shitbook I bought in 2011 with a 2008 core 2 duo cpu and it just werks. Just go for anything that's based on mainstream architecture (e.g. old Sandy Bridge or Haswell CPU), not some shitty low power Broadlel thing.

Although Intel is going full jew with current generation pentiums in similarly priced laptops being as powerful as my 4 years old laptop.

Well I can't really recommend anything since I'm still a HDD pleb until I get some money to upgrade my own laptop.

But your laptop should run all those things flawlessly.
It's not exactly a beast specs wise, but it's modern enough to not have issues with any of that.

It could be that your Windows install just shat itself over time.

I have considered linux in the past but Im not really adverse with such things, I have no idea how to install it either.
Also I am at uni and it helps having a common os.

Format Reinstall has always fixed everything, but with those specs and if he really needs the Laptop mainly for those two things, running a Linux system might be better.
You can run AoE2 with Wine and browsing obviously works.

I'm not trying to shill for freetards around the world, but if your needs are covered by Linux, there's little reason to stick around with Windows.

That said, I am still dual booting.

1) back up your important stuff
2) factory reset
3) only install the programs you need, NEVER install weird programs for your chinese MMOs
pro tip: go to ninite.com after reset.

I'm actually being serious mate.
He uses it as a desktop, it's propped up against the wall with A keyboard and mouse plugged in.

He also replaced the hdd with an sdd if that matters

Was sluggish and overheating under windows XP but now runs smooth as with Linux Mint.
And I use it as my main shitposting station, it's great if you don't play games.

Upgrade your ram and install an SSD. Works wonders. Or remove the CD drive if you dont want it and install the SSD in its place, you can still keep the HDD for more space. You could also keep the OS fast by installing it in the SSD. Lots of options here.

I took an old Dell dual core Athlon laptop with 3gb ram, 320gb 5400rpm HDD and Windows Vista from a friend who was pissed off at how slow it was. And yeah, this thing was shit. She was thinking of just scrapping it and buying something new for £400.

I persuaded her to invest £90 in her current laptop, which was £60 for a Kingston 240gb SSD and £30 for 8gb Corsair DDR3-1600 ram, plus a clean install of Windows 10 (via the W7/Dazloader upgrade and activate route). She's now happy as hell with it, for her general internet / email / Office usage it's now perfect for her.

Obviously if she was doing anything CPU or GPU intensive then replacing would have been her best option, but for basic use increasing ram and fitting an SSD gives any old laptop a speed boost and a useful life extension.
