I have HDD's from 1998 that still work perfectly fine and all my audio files play fine.
Anyway, the best form of long term archival storage is still tape drives at the moment, but that's not really a viable solution for a consumer.
As a consumer, it's best to just build a RAID 5/6. That way, if one or two drives die, you can just swap them out without losing everything.
