Then again maybe I'm just one of the few people left who has a desktop and a laptop these days.

anyone on /g/ who's using it is using it for vidya gaems (which I'm guilty of too) Normies use it cause it's what comes with the shitty plastic laptop they paid too much for at Best Buy.

MS is doing it because they hate how people got a copy of XP and then used it for over a decade. MS would much prefer they buy every version that comes out, since they like money, and want more sales and less support liability. Same thing's happening with 7, much of the world is saying "No, this is good enough, thanks, I'll keep it" So they switched models to assuming people won't upgrade on their own, and are now trying to boot people off 7 and onto their rolling-release 10, since a.) they can sell tracking data to advertisers, and b.) if they get everyone on it, they can make it into a subscription thing like Adobe did with Photoshop. The accounting department loves subscriptions.

You just wait, they'll be charging $30/month for Win10 in five years. That's the endgame here.

No it does not. I have a fully updated Windows 8.1 and I have not gotten any Win10 nagware.

I think they do it for the common user, i.e. "normies" if you want. I'm pretty sure it's way more easy to support an OS where everyone is on the same level (that's why they made Win10 free to upgrade to) and where you have a decent amount of system information in case something breaks so it's easier to fix it (error reports were the beginning of this, and what you refer to as tracking is an extension of that (note that hereby I only refer to the telemetry service and not all the other ones that can be easily disabled. With those, Microsoft is pretty much simply catching up to the concurrence. Not that that makes it a good thing, but it's not really relevant as it can be disabled). The harder to delay updates and not-to-be-disabled Windows Defender are in the same vein, to protect stupid people.

It's annoying for power users or in general people who know what they're doing, but I can see why they would do it. Most people just aren't computer-savy enough, and this has the potential to decrease virus infections and other problems.

Chances are that you can't crack the subscription mechanism without breaking updates. Because one effectively wouldn't subscribe for using Windows but for getting security updates. Have fun with that.

Here's what happened: MS had a monopoly on operating systems for so long that they got complacent and developed a bunch of internal political problems. When the mobile market exploded with the iPhone and Android, MS couldn't react fast enough and hobbled in with Windows Phone way too late. At the same time, Macs started eating into MS's Windows domination in the consumer desktop and laptop market. They started to get scared.

They realized that they couldn't actually offer any products that people wanted to buy, so they leveraged their monopoly and bolted Metro and an app store onto Windows 8. This made people understandably angry. MS tried to appease the crowd by making a few tweaks and releasing Win 8.1, while also launching a massive shill campaign across the internet to sway public opinion, but it still wasn't enough.

So they went balls in with Windows 10 and decided to stop even caring about the user. Ads in the start menu, data collection that makes the NSA erect, tight integration with every product MS makes shoved in your face, forced updates for most users. cloud EVERYWHERE. "Fuck you, its our computer now you little shits" MS says.

They have no clue what they're doing. They look at Google and Apple to see what they have done that's made them successful and then try to copy it, oblivious to the fact they aren't Google or Apple. They had something good with Windows 7, but instead of listening to what their customers are saying, they watch what their competitors are doing with dollar signs in their eyes.
