I just feel that if Apple is really planning to manufacture cars, Microsoft will probably go in that direction as well.

Apple has been a hardware manufacturer from the beginning, unlike Microsoft. In the last few years MS has started making hardware like the Xbox, the Surface line, the Band, now phones and before, the glorious Zune. Of course they didn´t have a store, what would they sell in MS stores before? Mice and keyboards? Come on, get with the times. Besides, MS still has ways to go before they perfect the art of stores like Apple has, but they are getting there.

iPad came before the Surface, but the Tablet PC was introduced in the early 2000's and the iPad in 2009 or 2010.

Of course they make a competing product against the other OS, what are they supposed to do, flame their OEMs and claim their computers suck? Are you retarded? They make expensive and well-built hardware because they KNOW 95% of computers bought are under the price of 1000$. Other OEMs don´t see the Book as a threat yet it is a hint from MS letting them know "hey, we are a software company with no experience and built THIS, step up your game".

Nah. Apple has copied some features from the Surface in the iPad Pro too, for example. And Apple has copied some features from Android too. It's just business. Competitors try to equal the field by copying features. Happens in literally any industry you can think of.
