Stereo or Joint Stereo?

So what I learnt about these two on the internet is: Joint Stereo is better with low quality formats (like < 256 kbps Mp3) while the other is better for higher quality formats. Is this true? What if there's a 320 kbps Joint Stereo mp3? Would the regular Stereo sound be better?

JS is the standard with all Lame presets, it allows for smaller file sizes by only encoding the centre channel once and the difference between L+R.

Joint stereo was invented because people realized what a piece of shit MP3 was at hiding audio artifacts at lower than 256 kbps. So they invented Joint stereo to help this pathetic crippled audio codec.

Basically stereo music is analyzed and any similar sounds on the L or R channels are encoded to a single channel called the mid channel. Sounds too different from the L or R channel are encoded on a side channel. In the end you will still experience "stereo" sound albeit a little crippled.

All that basically helped your shitty 128 kbps MP3 encodes sound better. All this was made unnecessary once LAME mp3 encoding was introduced though. Just use regular Stereo to avoid butchering the L or R channel.

Ok. Then according to your replies I must assume that JS is unnecessary for a higher quality format like 320 kbps and that it can even sound worse than regular Stereo. See, this is why I prefer Flac over mp3 or other shitty formats, at least I'm sure it's always registered in Stereo.

Oh god. No. Mid/Side (aka joint) stereo is a simple way to reduce coding redundancy between the left and right channels to improve coding efficiency.
