Instead, set BEGINNING = 1900, GREATEST = 1927, SILENTS=1945, BOOMERS=1964, etc.

have an if check that returns an error if year is inferior to beginning or superior to Z, then have multiple if checks in this format:
if (year <= greatest)
else if (year <= silents)
else if (year <= boomers)
etc.

In this way, you only have to stock values under 256. You are using less RAM. The same way it may be more clever to do something as

a = 2
b = 6
c=7

Rather than

a = 12047827148924800
b = 12047827148924804
c=12047827148924805

It seems silly with integrers, but it could be a great habit to have with more complex object, that are really memory hungry.

But the assignment is retarded anyway. 1979 is not a magic number and since it's only repeated once in a program, creating a constant for it only has downsides, no upsides.
