I installed NetworkManager and it just werks.

Pretty sure it even has an optional CLI.

With Gentoo you literally have to edit conf. files and pray that it works. Otherwise just use ethernet.

I prefer OpenBSD, but it doesn't have the same level of hardware support. FreeBSD is nice too, it's what I run on my VPS.

You should consider the BSDs to be completely different operating systems in most cases. They have a common ancestor but their development has isolated for like 20 years.

NetBSD is focused on portability and code correctness. It has the most ports available of the BSD family.

OpenBSD has a strong focus on security and code correctness. There are ports for many architectures.

FreeBSD is meant to be an all around general purpose OS like Linux. It works on a few different architectures but not as many as OpenBSD or NetBSD.

There's also DragonflyBSD which is meant to be a high performance multithreaded OS. DragonflyBSD is x86-64 only

Should I really upgrade openbsd to -stable or -current?

Is it really worth it most of the time? CVS is just so fucking slow and inconvenient to use. That, and the source tree seems to take like 5 GB of space.

OpenBSD - toy os riding the secure meme; about as secure as minix, ie. worthless. The second you add any useful software, it's the same shit as all others but with less hardware support and less kernel features and a lot, lot slower.
NetBSD - scraps or random code than can run on a toaster. No practical use.
FreeBSD - testing ground for OSX developers; some of the time won't boot on real hardware because development and testing only happens in a virtual machine.

Daily reminder that systemd is FOSS (Free Open Source Software) and that it is good software that fulfils the needs of modern devops, sysadmins, regular users and even application developers. Since work on systemd project restarted in 2010 and it's initial inclusion in Fedora Jan 2011 it has gained code contributions from over 600 developers worldwide and became the default init system and session manager in every major GNU/Linux distribution since 2012. Developers from each of these have commit access and have helped to design and shape systemd to fit their needs and unify core system between distributions over the last 5 years.

However as great of an improvement as it has proven to be it has attracted many paid trolls and mentally ill Linux users who spread lies and FUD about it, a large group of these single out developers and attack them with constant trolling, abuse, stalking and even death threats. Many of these 'people' are from the *BSD camps; after Linux usage and contributions sky-rocketed 15 years ago they have been on a constant mission to cause trouble, including making threats of violence and rape against people who create GPL licensed code.

There are also thought to be many of these people on the payroll of Microsoft to try and destroy strong powerful FOSS projects by negative campaigning and lie/FUD spreading. Fortunately as usual for Microsoft their FUD campaign and paid shills turn up 4 years too late and don't have technical arguments, making it obvious what they are: paid trolls.

This of course will mean, that Linux distro after Linux distro will switch over to systemd. Enjoy the future with systemd on every Linux distro; your negative attitude made it possible."

Yes, that is true last time you checked, and next KDE edition (KDE SC 5/Plasma 2) will of course also run on *BSD. But with reduced functionality on all non-systemd systems, compared with the systemd version.

This is not because of some sinister conspiracy, but because systemd offers easy use of many nice features that KDE and Gnome (and LXQT etc) would like to use, and non-systemd systems doesn't provide.

The point is exactly, that systemd is a very nice uniform Linux plumbing system, and that DE's are starting to take advantage of that."

So, as the wiki linked doesn't explain it: what is systemd, what does it do differently than init, and why is it bad? Init is the process that starts all other processes, that's what I know pretty much.

systemd is shit because it makes the init process do what was once conferred to a bunch of other programs, and, if my understanding is correct (I don't even trust my own understanding anymore), if init crashes, it takes the whole system down with it, so it's not a good idea to make that possible point of failure bigger than it has to be

This is my teenager who read about this for 5 minutes understanding of it, based on what I had read (not much).

People constantly make the mistake of assuming systemd is an init system. It's a collection of utilities with an init system in it. The init system is just a small part of it but is actually required for systemd to function. The other parts aside from the journaling daemon are optional and can be removed. Journald can be disabled and you can use another journal daemon but it can't be removed entirely without rewriting it.

Illumos is sort of like how GNU/Linux works, it's not really an OS all on its own it's a family of OSes based on OpenSolaris. Oracle fucked up OpenSolaris so the devs just left and started Illumos and continued their work there.

There's a lot of weird differences, BSDs are heavy on configuration through text files and they heavily emphasize the separation between the "base" system and the user's own installed applications. BSD core utilities may behave differently compered to their counterparts from the GNU set and counterparts for some GNU utilities may not exist on BSDs because there's an application that already handles that function. BSD applications also tend to have fewer switches so they're simpler and have less lines of code but they might not be as powerful.

I only installed XP on a machine not connected to the internet to play around with ROM hacking programs that didn't have a Linux version, and saw how I didn't like Windows much as an OS, I only liked the programs I could run with it.

Then I self-trolled for years while I made XP no longer nostalgic.

Being a ricer might have something to do with it, I couldn't help but rice TinyXP for a while.

As for init, it had runlevels, it uses sysvinit, but, it uses BSD-style init scripts.

I didn't have a computer until I was 14 years old (Nov. 3, 2001, my dad bought me my first computer as a birthday present, about a week before my birthday, it took a lot of effort on my part to convince him to get me a computer), so what I'm unfamiliar with, is what were things like outside my awful childhood and video games in the 90s.

BSD core utilities may behave differently compered to their counterparts from the GNU set and counterparts for some GNU utilities may not exist on BSDs because there's an application that already handles that function. BSD applications also tend to have fewer switches so they're simpler and have less lines of code but they might not be as powerful.

Also by default "vi" is not vim on BSD, vi is just vi. You can install vim though.

Default shell is pdksh or csh. Bash can be installed but you shouldn't install it for root. This is an old unix belief, the root should only use a statically linked shell because if the partition that libraries reside on get nuked you wont be stuck without a shell.

I already did a LFS install with a FX-8350, it took me 1 week to be able to boot on it. But I wasn't always in front on my computer and immediately compiling the other packages once one was done. Just, sometimes I check if it's done and launch a command. I took my time.

But there's something that I don't get. People often says arch or gentoo are hard to install, and LFS is worse, but I found it easy actually..

Now my goal is to install it again, but make it usable, with a DE and be able to run a software.

Slackware is a great, solid system and will teach you how to do a lot of useful Linux tasks without dropping you into a shitty "minimalist" environment and teaching you to use dirty hacks to put everything together (like Arch, for example).

A lot of people are scared of it because it doesn't resolve dependencies when you install new programs, but Slackware has a sort of "fire and forget" philosophy where you install the entire system and then you don't have to worry about having any missing pieces. If you ever need to install software that the base Slackware install doesn't include, it's trivial to track down a few unofficial packages and install them.

I used vim for years before switching to acme. As soon as I got used to acme I was already way more productive with it than I had ever been with vim. I found that mouse chording is simply faster. And remember to use the standard Unix keyboard shortcuts in acme like ^w and ^a and ^e.

The abstraction is just a technology used to serve this need, because abstraction helps make programmers more productive (in a capitalist sense) and it also helps create standard interfaces for a lot of big programs to work together.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, and I'd be happy with computer tech progressing a lot more slowly if it meant that the software was a lot better. But software is big business, and big business has its own demands, and you can't stop capitalism

Yes software does get messy as a result of bad design. As for "do more things", we seem to be doing the same thing (or less) year after year with more and more demanding software. Pointless increases in complexity and towers of abstractions are continuously nullifying advances in hardware. You never saw an Apple ][ or IBM PC struggle to keep up with a person's typing, yet Firefox is struggling to keep up with my typing as I write this post in the Javascript-riddled post field, and I don't have a weak PC and I'm not a particularly fast typist.

Depends whether you've hit the limit of Brooks's Law.

But yeah a lot of software's shit because it's mainly cashgrabs as opposed to well-considered programs. So there's an argument in either direction.

The gentoo team actively maintains anti-systemd packages. No matter how evil systemd is, people should still be allowed to infect themselves with it. Hence, I prefer Gentoo.

There's a lot of enterprise companies that /g/ has never heard of who back BSD and contribute to it because it's an asset to their infrastructure.

These days the only real relationship between apple and BSD is apple pushing their compiler into it to force out GCC.
