>>51043883>>51043345Quake 3 engine (idTech 3) was licensed by a shitton of game makers. As someone else mentioned Call of Duty games still run on a raped Q3 engine. Unreal is the only other engine with similar past. Unreal was the one which manged to spread and more and more people used it as time passed. This trend is still goes on for Unreal. Both the first Unreal engine and idTech 1-3 (most notably 2 and 3) were created back when doing proper 3D was the new dream. Carmacks idTech engine was notable for doing proper 3D with large maps (err...), shading and static shadows.
Another one of his achievements was the Doom 3 engine (idTech 4) in 2004. The shadowing technique and the ability that everything projects shadows back in 2004 was the real deal for gaming, plus for it's time it had a quite decent shading model.
>>51045082Carmack is good at coding. The engine architecture of the idTech engines are quite excellent for the time they were written in and widely regarded as such. For example you can replace the entire renderer of idTech 2 quite easily. That says something about it's architecture. Someone did this with Urho3D here:
