I need help selecting a computer for school. I need it to do specific things though

>CNC Machinist course
>need to be able to work with a CAD/CAM software like Solidworks
>needs to be Windows OS because the CNC doesn't like Apple and fucks up the gcodes when they talk to each other
>need a computer that is about or below $600

A quadro/firepro gpu and preferably a quad-core cpu, since we're talking laptops. A SSD would also be nice. You need to spend a lot more cash it you want to get your job done in a reasonable amount of time. Look for some used professional laptops on eBay. Memepads, latitudes, elitebooks are all fine.

Your best bet is talking with the school you will be attending. Call/email the department and see if they have any recommendations. If that doesn't work you could try the professors.

/g/ can be hit or miss with questions like yours. We are much better at discussing consumer products.

Another good site I would recommend for questions is stackexchange:

Although I am not sure with sub-site would be more suited for CAD software/hardware questions (I use/search the programming and EE sites).

unless you are working with huge assemblies or complex PLM software doing lots of analysis any shitty laptop will do.

I use my x220 Thinkpad running a windows virtual machine for Solidworks/Solidcam and I have no performance issues.

You don't need a workstation card to get bare minimum performance. U will need a gpu your laptop, anon is right you will need a 4 core. Look for an ultra book with a 4 core Intel and a mid range mobile gpu. Should be about 650 on eBay
