So my trusty 7 year old PC is on the way out I think. Motherboard seems to be on the fritz.

Anyway, I see Microcenter has an AMD FX-6300 with MB combo for $125 bucks. Is this processor worth getting even though its, what, 3 or 4 years old?

OP if you are still here you need to ask this question before you even start looking for parts.

1. What is my use case (needs)?

2. What is my budget?

In hardware there are two things that are similar but different. Needs and Wants. Needs are what you need to do a task or use case. Wants are what we all would like to have but we might not need to have. Your use case determines your needs. When you buy in terms of needs to choose what hardware can do the task you want by paying the least. This way you can get the most out of your budget and be able to tackle all your needs. Wants are things you buy that won't really affect your usecase. Things like led lights or overpowered GPU compared to your usecase are wants. You don't need those to have a good PC that satisfy your needs.

Anyway if you ever read this thread again or for anyone in the future. If you are gonna ask /g/ recommendation, which is frown upon btw, you need to have a budget and a usecase in mind. Then, and only then could /g/ help you.

This fellow has the right of it. However, I will say that if you're here on /g/ and you'lre looking to do anything besides bare-minimum browsing or local file server tasks, it would not be a good use of your funds to buy that chip/combo. Hell, if you're going to buy something that old, buying it used from a hardware enthusiast forum will probably be cheaper and better than a combo like that.

But seriously, what are you looking to do?

For decent gaming and daily tasks yes, but only 1080p maybe 1440p but there is no way in hell this chip getting u to 4k in any games, the fx 8320 or 8350 (what I use is the 8320) is very good for the buck as well and I think they have a deal on a new mb on newegg, but if you need to save that money than the fx 6300 is your best cpu for the money in 2015 so ya, its 100% worth it if you can't slightly raise you r budget
