why isn't 3d printing used more? I understand that we can't print everything, but why isn't it common to print simple static objects like furniture, building materials and machinery parts? and why isn't there a local communal 3d printer here?

Cost of materials, scalability, and production time. 3d printers are more expensive to run, as far as cost-per-unit goes. Injection molded plastic will always win in that regard.

Combine that with cost of entry and technical savvy.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Injection molding is more expensive for small runs. For large runs, injection molding is king.

It's kind of expensive to 3D print.

It cost me around $20 to print out this 3 1/2 inch little statue figurine through Sculpteo.

If you told me I could print out the same figurine for $1, I'd be 3D printing ALL THE TIME. I'm fascinated with the concept of extracting 3D models of characters from my favorite video games and printing them out.

Why 3d print that shit when its mass-produced? Timber and osb is cheap as fuck compared to the same amount of filament. Parts for machines (especially car parts) are either cnc'd or hand milled. Can't make a car block out of plastic.

My brother is an engineer and his company use 3D printers for display purposes, they deisgn machine parts and find it easier to make a deal with a client by handing him a model of the part they are going to make then show him designs or computer generated shite.

It isn't made out of plastic. That figure is made out of some kinda grainy hard resin; it's solid. Also, could consumer grade 3D printers even do multiple colors?

The 3D Printers they use are worth thousands of dollars.
