it doesn't have a source "file", rather a source CLSID, which for the recycle bin, is {645ff040-5081-101b-9f08-00aa002f954e}

since the one on the desktop isn't "the" recycle bin, i'd call it a shortcut

Sure, but .lnk files are just (yet another) hack that Windows uses to expose filesystem shortcuts to Explorer. It's still a shortcut.

There's absolutely fucking nothing on my desktop and I rarely even see it. Firefox is my desktop on both monitors. Everything I need is on the taskbar (if open constantly and requires a slot) or the start menu. Taskbar is set to auto-hide because why would you not do that.
Move the recycle bin to Quick access in explorer, scrub.

Icons on desktop exist to provide quick access to software or folders, as if you frequently use something, there is no reason not to place icon for 2-3 clicks to access, than having to either type whole sentence (in case of Windows also waiting a moment for OS to realize what you want from it) or pin every single software and folder to start menu, making it xbox huge. Whats the point of desktop then, anyway?

Again, in case of Windows, typing name in Start menu require to actually check what got selected in first place - I ran way too often into situation, when typing "windows update" somehow would select update for some service instead, OS would fail to find what I was looking for, making typos, and once got pissed when I entered game name and it selected "uninstall game X" instead.

Preferences I guess. Typo forces me to write again and it is hard to spot, when everything enter with 1-2s delay (since it start searching before I hit enter), but in general I operate with mouse much faster, than typing with keyboard. Especially when I dont use my dekstop at the moment, but use laptop instead.
