I'm fantasizing about dropping my jew ISP and using public wifi from my house.

The router is quite a few blocks from here, though, I'd definitely need a better antenna. I don't know much about this, can anyone give some guidance? What factors should I consider in an antenna? Is this is feasible plan at all?
Would it be possible to build a wifi relay out of an antenna a raspberry pi and a router? I'm just thinking about networking for the first time and it's exciting but I don't know much.

No.
Is the public wifi in your area fast? Are you even allowed to download huge files? The router in question probably has an omnidirectional antenna, so it wasn't set up with someone like you in mind. Also to have a somewhat usable connection you better have visual contact to the router and mostly good weather.

These really aren't things I care about. It's fast enough for convenient browsing and playing videos with minimal buffering.

I think it does, I'm pretty sure I've seen it, it's got one of those white disk antennas. What's the problem here?

Scout the route between your place and the router.

See if you can procure a repeater that can be powered over ethernet. Put the repeater as close as you think you can get away with, and stretch the cable all the way back to your place.

A parabolic antenna is always nice but probably not worth it.

Also forget about privacy and confidentiality.

It'll be expensive but you could probly find some nema 3 boxes (electrical supply) a repeater, a solar array and some utility looking marking tape.

The marking tape let's you hide the array in plain sight, since very few people go poking through that. You'll have to figure out where to set it up at and how. The giant green boxes that service underground laterals could work. Basically don't bolt it to the doors or the back of the box because that's where busbars are.

Telephone poles might work but I never see boxes on them.

You will probly need some batteries for night surfing so figuring out how much juice you need could be a problem. Make the box too big and someone might notice especially on install. The plan being you go do this shit at night. That's a lot of work but you could setup a mesh net type of framework.

A can of soup and a few small cheap parts and you'll be fine. Don't blow a wad of cash on a big huge fucking antenna that really isn't that much better, seriously.

The Nalley Big Chunk version is fantastic, I've made a few of them and get a solid 9-10 dB of gain and can hit APs nearly 5 miles away with a decent ~-70-75 dB signal which is more than adequate to maintain a 5 Mbps connection at worst, probably 30 Mbps at best depending on the weather (seriously).

Free 24 hour wifi in McDonald's

Have a rasp pi with antenna at a point near mcd

Use that rasp pi as a transmitter broadcasting the wifi out

In the area between your house and mcd have another reciever and transmitter

Recieve wifi at house and use

I understand that this probably would be weather dependent , location dependent as if there's buildings in the way. Latency
Etc

Have rasp pi weather proofed set up with solar power charger and ssh into it and have it do some of the downloading of content you need done, whatever else you can imagine

After set up a rasp pi close to the free wifi. Essentially having a mini computer powered independently providing weathers correctly acconted for

McDs Wi-Fi is capped at about 1 Mbps, flaky at the best of times, and your impromptu solution wouldn't work for more than a few hours at best before dumping you. Their portal shit is "intelligent" enough to know when someone is connected for longer than a few hours and it kicks them out per MAC address.

Yes you can then just change it but really, it becomes nothing but frustration trying to stay connected and it's not worth the fucking hassles for the low speed connection that isn't worth shit to begin with.

Theoretically it's possible, sure, but it's highly impractical, unstable, and potentially illegal depending on your local laws (you'd have to find that out yourself). From a purely technical standpoint that also covers the legal perspective, if you're not an active customer of that McDonald's - and that doesn't mean "Oh, yeah, I bought a Big Mac and Coke there about 9 years ago so I'm a customer..." - then you're technically and legally not allowed to make use of their Wi-Fi.

Yes, I know the whole point of this thread is for the OP to find a way to get free Internet access by using some "public" Wi-Fi but the McDonald's circuit isn't public so, that's where the legal line gets crossed.

I know you and perhaps the OP doesn't give a fuck about such things but, if you're in a position where you're too cheap to pay for an Internet connection with an ISP (for whatever reason), think of how much of a loser you're gonna be using McDonald's Wi-Fi pilfered from some half-ass repeater setup that gets you busted for theft of wireless/computer services.

Imagine explaining that in a jail cell to a guy that just admitted he's in for axe murdering someone he considered his best friend just for saying "Hi..." to his redneck trailer trash wife.

I mean really.

Next time your neighbours host a Christmas party, find their router and either connect a powerline adapter to it, or find another cable chord and attach your own router, then a powerline adapter.

Outside, find an outlet on the side of their house, or backyard, and plug in another adapter. Ethernet cable to another adapter hooked up to an outlet on the outside of your house.

Inside your house, wherever you plug in a powerline adapter you have access to their interwebz

Find out what isp they use, either through looking through their mail, or asking at the Christmas party, then have a friend dress up like a service man from that company. Have him say that there's a security flaw, and that he needs to install a small micro computer (the powerline adapter), and have it plugged into their router. He'll then set it up inside, then call you to "finish the setup back at - insert isp name here-", but in actuality you'll be outside with another adapter, and setting it up. When they're synced, your friend says it's all good and leaves. You then run an Ethernet chord, either underground or on another inconspicuous manner, and hook it up to an adapter outside your house.
