OP's point is presumably about physical area.
A so-called 34" ultrawide has less screen space than a 29" 16:9.

Pixels are anothee argument altogether, but 2560x1080 and 3440x1440 screens are really more like cropped 1440p and UHD displays...

Yes it does, because horizontal size is what mostly determines view coverage.

you see more width than height. a large 21:9 screen will fill your view better if compared to a 16:9 screen of the same size.

I'll always take more width real estate since I constantly have a ton of folders, spreadsheets, and browsers up. More height doesn't help me one fucking bit.

Area determines how much of your field of view the display occupies (as our field of view is so large, you'd have to sit stupidly close to a massive screen to fill it). At the same diagonal measurement the taller aspect ratio monitor (up to 1:1) will have the most area.

that our fields of view aren't as tall as they are wide would only matter if you're sitting close enough that a more squarish display's height would exceed your ~100 degree vertical FOV.

A 5.5m diagonal 16:10 screen doesn't through my door or on my wall.

A 6.5m diagonal 21:9 screen is much bigger but does.

The vertical field of view that's actually sharp is closer to 30 degrees. (vs 60 degrees horizontal).
And easily reached by a large monitor or giant TV.

For peripheral vision you use ambilight.

your foveal region is only a few degrees across.
everything else is your eyes darting around and your brain filling in detail.
your eyes don't stop being sharp as you glance up, down, or to the sides.

OP's pic was right, 2nd anon's math was wrong.

34" 21:9 has about the same area as a 31.5" 16:9.
You get screwed out of ~18% area at the same given diagonal, which means that that ultrawides need to have sqrt(1.18) bigger diagonals (~8%) to have the same area.

OP is right that diagonal size is a worthless measurement now that aspect ratios vary so much.

Specs should be something like aspect ratio/vertical height/ppi:
> 13.1"x1.78@110ppi for 27" 1440p
> 13.1"x2.39@110ppi for 34" 3440x1440
> 19.6"x1.78@110ppi for 40" UHD
