I'm building a computer very soon and aiming for 16gb. Should I get 2 x 8gb or 4 x 4gb? What's the benefit of having one over the other?

All I'll really be doing is playing an MMO with my browser open and maybe a twitch stream in the background, if that helps.

If you don't already know the benefits then it won't benefit you at all.

What you should be aiming for is a DDR4 machine so that it lasts you longer.

You won't be getting quad channel unless you go for an LGA 2011 CPU. The regular platforms only support dual channel.

Don't buy consumer garbage. Buy quad ranked ECC memory that runs at the speed of your bus. Quad ranked will always be faster than single or dual ranked as long as your motherboard supports it. Don't buy a motherboard that doesn't support it. The rest of your equipment has error correction. There's no reason your ram shouldn't be included.

VMware Workstation has a limit of 32 open VMs. Also its nice to walk in to an interview and tell whoever that you have a 3 node vSphere cluster at home.

Not that anon, but you're wrong, because 32GB DIMMs are likely to be LRDIMMs and the 16GB DIMMs are likely to be RDIMMs. The extra buffers increase latency. See my pic here >>51062006, notice how my timings at 11-11-11-28 and pretty much every other speccy screenshot with show 9-9-9 or better for DDR3 1600. Thats because of the buffers on the RDIMMs

I had 16GB in my desktop, I upgraded to 32GB after I started consulting for Micron. No discount, just gave me a fuzzy feeling to put some money back in the system that was responsible for my current paycheck.

16GB in my X230 because a kit was dirt cheap ($60) in 2012. 8GB in my surface pro 3 is fine with integrated graphics. It's not quite enough (8gb) on my work laptop because I have to use some java based desktop apps and they eat RAM like crazy.
