PANIC!!!

Alright guys this is is, i have finally gotten the chance to prove my worth. I work at a smaller telemarketing company as a caller (i study CS in university on the side) and the 2nd guy in command of the company offered me to create a booking prototype website that the employees can use to login and book their work shifts each week (its a part-time kind of job with mostly students who work 4 hours here and there). If it turns out good he will buy it and i get a full time job as the main IT guy at the office with other responsibilities too, so i really dont want to blow this chance.

My problem is that i have only developed sites for desktop use that are not mobile friendly. I honestly have no idea how to even make the shit work for smaller devices. Any tips and guides on things i should do or take into consideration? Which tools should i use?

Is it really just as simple as to use @media queries in CSS and thats it?

also no reason to use meta keywords, as any search engine worth its salt including the almighty google ignores them. also using meta keywords means your competitors will enjoy looking at what keywords you're trying to target ;)

Had an interview arranged with a startup (not many of those around where I'm from, I'd have even had to move city for this one) but they filled the position I was after before I even got a chance to meet them. Now I'm looking for my first non-contractor, non-agency, non-freelance gig and all I'm finding is recruiter spam. Recruiters have ruined searching the web for jobs. The people whose job it is to make finding a job easier have made it harder, all to justify their own existence. Pricks.

turns out they forgot to tell me they wanted a single page app.

well they'll be paying me for a while longer then. also fuck react. there are some really good ideas, I'll give you that but the documentation is ridiculuous and problems are constant

I know nothing about web design, I got lots of help from other people. I'm still learning, but I tihnk CSS is really messy... that's what I'm using the easy option.

Platform: OpenShift

Register and create your first webapp with the instant laravel 5 cartridge.

Go here https://developers.openshift.com/en/getting-started-overview.html
and install the OpenShift client according to your OS. Then just run rhc setup and follow the instructions (you'll be asked for your openshift account and password, and also setup a SSH key so you can SSH/Git clone your webapp).

Clone the git repository of your webapp in your home machine, and then deploy your environment as https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-fundamentals/episodes/2 says (reffer here http://laravel.com/docs/5.0/homestead for further help)

To install Twitter Bootstrap just do this
https://bitbucket.org/beni/laravel-4-tutorial/wiki/Add_Twitter-Bootstrap

Then just follow https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-fundamentals and http://laravel.com/docs/5.0, what you done with OpenShift and Homestead is just fire up your webapp, so you can just focus on your code.

Once you know how Laravel implements Views (they're plain phps in resources/views/) you can just literally copy paste stuff from somewhere like http://www.bootstrapzero.com/

Around 65% of the minimum wage in my country (~950 €), free of charges since i'm still considered a student, during the first year, then 75% (~1100€) the 2nd year, then 80% the 3rd year (~1200 €). And yeah it's a 3 year contract.

It's not great compared to what some of my friends are paid doing internship in the US (I've heard some of them were paid around 3-4000$ a month for a 6 months internship). But i'll still be paid when i'm at school, and I'm sure to have a job as soon as i get my diploma (unless i severely fuck everything up)

Feels like yet another php image board, or some other relatively slow language.

I have some issues with common image boards, if it looks like 4chan with 4chanx it's fine and even good, but if it looks like 4chan during its first year, what the fuck are you you even doing and why would anyone choose to post there? Let's be honest, you didn't even write it! And even if you did, I don't like it when you have to scroll or navigate for controls or when buttons need to be clicked twice.

Speed is not needed for image boards, unless you need to calculate the integral of a polynomial after every sentence.

Is this a good way to rotate ads? I found the base of this code online and it makes sense. But that did make me wonder if mt_rand ensures each ad would be shown for an equal amount of time theoretically. Because random can also mean one ad is shown a hundred times and another zero times.

It's responsiveness...

You think the 300ms or so it takes php or asp to respond isn't much, but somehow across a wan that 300ms becomes a forever and it can take whole seconds to respond. That's unpleasant.

If your backend takes only a few milliseconds to respond, you're in the clear and you can even get it so JavaScript functions and Ajax calls happen faster than reloading the page. Websites like that feel good to use.

Just going to end on... Java, C# and C++ really aren't bad languages to use, especially against PHP.

Things still don't happen immediately though, when we ask for "responsive" we're really talking about a range from what a desktop GUI tells like to your shitty bored with the hackneyed database that falls apart when it starts holding more than a few MB of data.

Caching fucks up Ajax requests for dynamic content, which is where you need a really quick backend. The only other easy tip is using gzip from your static server, but beyond that sometimes you just have to admit that a language which can benchmark so many times over slower is just going to be slower.

About caching, anyone have success using ETags? I read on Wikipedia weak ETags are good for dynamic content.

Care to elaborate on how to cache right? From what I can tell, Firefox won't even send a request to the backend if it's cached, unless you use no cache which is the popular fix nowadays. Caching could have made the web amazing.

On that link, I get about 70 requests a second from php... But I can get up to 20000 requests a second from fastcgi (c++) and generally around 2000 requests a second from a fully implemented C# backend (with a forum/comment system). Whilst this is all well and good considering C++ has a lot less abstraction than PHP (meaning either a lot more code or a lot more libraries), C# doesn't. As in, C# code can look a lot cleaner and be a lot more maintainable than PHP, even then Ruby and Python code can look reasonably maintainable. There is no reason to use PHP, it's now outdated. Let it die, like Cobol, let it have tech debt and then we'll pay the few remaining PHP devs a seniors wage, like Cobol.

I want to simplify everything to $.getJSON() calls but to do that I need to find a way to get past the caching problems without using no cache. Dude, I literally did nothing then today noticed my local installation of LAMP stopped working because suddenly MySQL is puking some user permission errors. It all seems to stem from some autoupdate, as far as I could tell from checking the error log. So it asks the network "Hey guys, who's the router here?" So at our startup, in the early days, we (they) decided we would use Scala from the ground up because it "scales" and is faster. Development cycles are long and it takes weeks to train new employees.

But the biggest fucking joke is that we never get over 50,000 hits a day and literally any framework can handle that pretty well. We could have done the whole thing in Rails or whatever in a quarter of the time. In fact I don't think you need to worry about specialized architecture unless you're getting millions of requests or doing heavy IO.

So my point is, never worry about scaling, by the time you need to scale to millions of users, you'll have the money to hire people who can do that for you. Google modified Python for YouTube, Facebook compiles PHP to C for performance. Imagine if they had done that from the start.

If your site looks like stock Bootstrap sites, it's easy.

If you have any custom shit on the site. have fun fixing the rendering differences in Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari, mobile browsers, different screen sizes, different screen ratio orientations, etc.

Seriously responsiveness was just a fucking bad idea. Why? Because most of the time you won't be able to fit all the content you have on the desktop page in the small screen format without making the site a huge scrollfest.

So, you will have to transform every UI element on the site into more concise versions of the full-blown site. Eventually the mobile version becomes a toy version of the real site, offering you only the concise elements, not the whole browsing experience.

Let's just admit it complex content has no real place on mobiles. It will never work this way on small screens, no matter what.

It is a fad and unfortunately it's holding back web development rather than making it progress, by adding a lot of extra dev time to each project.

It was probably a better idea to keep separate mobile and desktop versions of the site, as retarded as it sounds, at least when you develop the mobile version you don't have to keep fucking around with your page elements which you developed for big screens to scale and fit properly on small screens, but in a different way.

Responsiveness is the future. Once we don't have to develop for deprecated browsers anymore then we'll literally only have to make sure it looks good on web + tablet + smartphone. Start from mobile and build up from there. If you end up with a ton of white space as is often the case with bootstrap sites it doesn't really matter anyway since it looks cleaner and having too much content on the screen makes it look ugly, cluttered and a horrible user experience. It also has the added benefit of being able to spot ads more easily.

Really there shouldn't be any difference, the web is the new desktop for programs, that's how it should be. The web is not and shouldn't be just for "web sites", ie digital newspapers. So, why not? What's so difficult to grasp about this new reality?

Yes, that's exactly why I don't like it. You start from a gimped version of the site just to make sure the "mobile" hipsters will have a pleasant experience. They are so much more important, they have to get their toy, simplified site in pixel perfect shape, amirite.

Imagine that you want to read about a car you would like to buy and want to see lots of details, maybe even technical diagrams, maybe you're interested in seeing high resolution pics, etc. This type of content can never be properly viewed on small screens. If you want to have any serious job done, you have to go big screen. That's what I'm talking about.

Mobiles are mostly for trifling shit, like buying a pizza, checking email, looking for directions on maps and so on.

I don't plan to ask you the obvious noob question ("how to build a website"), i'd rather know where do you guys get domain names, and what web host do you choose?

My site will be pretty small and very basic, something like http://business.wpdiy.net/wp/ - that is example site from Lynda.com tutorials.

There will be no more than 1000 visits/month, i will have only couple of simple pages with images, one blog page, and one page with youtube links

Considering I'm from the Netherlands I tend to choose TransIP. But they certainly aren't the cheapest and you can surely find a cheaper American company, like perhaps Dreamhost.com or whatever.
