Anyone done a "retro" top of the line pc build? Y'know, gone on ebay and scooped up what was top of the line shit 10 years ago on the cheap, put it together and hoped for the best?

I don't know why, but I've got a weird desire to build an Athlon FX-5x + X850XT PE system. That or a Tulatin Piii system.

Have any of you done similar? What do you use your old builds for? (I haven't thought that far ahead).

I just picked this box up with that intention, going to put a pair of Pentium Pros in it and use it as a retro WinNT/Citrix server

I mostly buy used top of the line OEM systems rather than build though, whiteboxes couldn't hold a candle to high-end PC workstations from companies like HP or IBM

/vr/ only seems really good for talking about pre-1995 gear, to be honest. I don't like shitting up their threads with late 90s+ stuff.

Working with old shit is a pretty fun/educational experience. Nothing has really fundamentally changed in PCs for a long time, the hardware is cheap and the software is plentiful.

Not to mention a ton of shit back then was practically art.

Tualatin was never high-end though outside of servers, especially since most of them ran on slower than shit PC133 SDRAM.
