Do you need demanding hardware for gaming?

I7-4710HQ, 16Gb Ram, GTX 860M (Maxwell, not that kepler shit), 4k IPS screen.

Newegg sells then for $700 refurbished. Mine looked brand new.

Is it a bad idea? I kind of need it to replace my desktop. I don't intend on moving it around everywhere, but some battery life would be nice for homework and portable use on occasion.
