Worst case scenario for video streaming (other than going full embedded which is implausible due to storage/processing required) would be server side timers. Still can mute and black out the ad, just have to wait.

In most cases you can block the element detecting your adblocker.

If the ad is inserted into the video stream then you can can't block it (the ad is part of the video). I think if advertisers had done this method of advertising for the start then you wouldn't have so many people pissed off about ads in the first place.

That's what I meand by embedded. If the ads are personalized that would mean considerable increase of processing or storage (keep every video with 10-100 different versions of ads) or decrease of ad relevance.

At that point I just won't use the internet anymore.

My browser doesn't support those v2 captchas that ask you to pick a bunch of pictures. If that starts becoming global I just won't use any site that requires it.

Anyone else feel like you're stealing from the advertiser when you load an ad but don't buy the product? I mean the poor advertiser is paying the site money to host their ads, but I will never buy anything from them. That's why I block ads. Out of courtesy for the advertiser so they don't have to pay the site for an extra load on someone who isn't interested in the product.

There's no way to stop adblockers. Even if these people fart around and create some system that does JS checks to see if one is installed, all of that shit is handled by the browser to begin with. You can't trust your code to behave the way you think if it's being run in an interpreter you don't have ownership over and that people want to modify.
Not that the browser should trust people's code arbitrarily, either. JS is such a disgusting clusterfuck.

Your browser will download and diligently display them.

But turns out one of these addresses points to an ad.
Adblockers rely on URLs to figure out which is ad and which is not. You can't figure that from just URLs if ad URLs looks just like URLs pointing to site content.

What you're suggesting is essentially an arms race.
There are tons of advertisers all over the would who would be paid for breaking adblock rules, because this in the end generates net profit.
And there is just a tiny bunch of neckbeards who would be making new adblock rules in their free time.

Do you know how ads work? And I mean majority of websites participating in banner exchange systems, not the ones that "deliver the journalism" along with circlejerk of ads for associated projects? It's not impossible to concatenate videos without reencoding. Hell, with youtube's DASH they don't even have to remux. They can easily do it on the fly without storing the different video versions.

I wish it was more common, like muxing the content for torrent files is totally idiotic. If it wasn't muxed I could fetch only the subtitle or audio track from a torrent without getting the whole content.

Right now, adblockers are just doing lazy URL blocking, but there's way more intelligent adblocking you can do.
Alternatively, you could just disable images, except on sites you actually care about seeing them on.
