The choice you have in Linux, or in anything else is that which SOMEONE CHOOSE TO PROVIDE.

If upstream wants to go with X, there's no point in whining about them dropping Y, if you want Y, step up and maintain it yourself, noone owes you support for your pet setup.

And it's hilarious that OP lists the BSD's, they all come as FULL operating system, they offer NO CHOICE, they support ONLY what they ship as their OS.

Pretty sure it's OpenRC. It uses FreeBSD's kernel so it would be extremely difficult to port even parts of systemd over.

OpenBSD is better, especially for laptops. Much easier to use the system, better hardware support, better suspend/resume and power management. Plus all the security mitigations FreeBSD doesn't have, like stack smash protector, ASLR, PIE, W^X, pledge... smaller, simpler, generally saner codebase.

Definition of 'nothing wrong' in this particular context: it does not violate anyone's freedom in any way

That is NOT saying that it's a good init system. It's saying that I have no issue with the license, and as far as I know, it doesn't do any kind of DRM shit.

I didn't have to reboot my computer very often, but, I used to edit the init scripts with some extra lines to add funny stuff in, removed any pointless stuff which was just there by default and didn't work or apply to my system,

God damn, this feels so weird, writing about this while I'm still grieving about my cat. I feel more like I want to remember how I used to hug, pet, and play with my cat.

Of course, the results of editing the init scripts with lines I put in to laugh at, was lols.

I guess you never learned much about computers, hardware, software, or elsewise.

Why are you so mad that some people don't like this init system? I am not even a sysvinit zealot, I was just never super mad at it or the runlevels, even if the runlevels are unnecessarily like a psycho switching between their multiple personalities. Replacing sysvinit is fine. I don't like the crap people want to replace it with.

And, yeah, I actually like to watch a verbose list of wtf it's doing scroll up my screen while a computer boots, and read each thing as it boots. If something goes wrong and it freezes, it's better if I can see some output on the screen, than if it just fucks itself up and there's no output of what's going on.

I can probably rice any BSD the way I used to do to Slackware, then, adding funny lines into the init scripts for the lols. And, though I was experimenting on faster computers than I had before, it does boot pretty fast compared to sysvinit, maybe sysvinit is the slowest.

-a new init system was required and systemd was the best option
-people that say systemd are people afraid of loosing their jobs and/or don't want to learn to use systemd or just don't know a thing about this topic.

I searched more and more and more and my personal conclusion is that systemd shouldn't even exist.

Basically code written in the stack(say by a buffer overflow) cannot be arbitrarily executed. If an application attempts to execute code written to the stack it will crash instead.

Pretty sure you can configure the httpd daemon with only FOUR lines, and then there's the new doas, where writing a rule is as simple as writing permit nopass user as root cmd /path/to/binary

Far better than sudo.
