As for the short pcie slot that's fine now that there's high performance short cards like the 970, fury, and nano.
Also volume alone is a poor measure of case size. Shape needs to be taken into account as well. A cube shape will have less of a footprint for a given volume than one that's stretched out along a dimension. A 1U rackmount server can be roughly 10 liters in volume, but takes up much more room in practice (assuming you don't have a rack in your house) than a case like this one.
