How do I access Spotify on my smartphone without using their official app?

I don't trust their app and it wants all sorts of permissions. I don't care about the ads.

Is there an open source alternative player that can login into Spotify?

I'm open to other suggestions if you have them.

first, install AFWall+, it automaticly blocks connections from new apps
then get a permission manager like app ops

This is fixed in Android 6.0 but you're right it should have been there much sooner. Cyanogenmod has it since ages.

Kinda but not really. You cannot block google from doing anything and still cannot block ads unless rooted.

yeah and sadly they are not going to change that since their business revolves around ads and data mining... this is one of the big pros of Apple in comparison to Google.

IMO it's still better to use an open source custom rom without gapps than being part of the Apple botnet.

I think it is permissions like "syncing" contacts and getting location that worries people who just want to listen to music.
