Out of all the laptops I've ever owned, I've never had one that cheap last more than 2-3 years. Not even when maintained properly, unless it's business class or has a socketed processor. BGAs like to get brittle after a lot of use.

I'm not even studying CS or related, but at my department everybody is slowly discouraged to have Windows on their systems, because every software we have to use is much more convenient on Unix (rumours go it's even impossible otherwise). Nobody cares whether it's Linux, BSD or OSX, but when you are running Windows and ask a question, the answer is very likely "There's a quick guide on how to install a Unix OS on our website".
