Anyway, I like Synology for the easy solution. Mine was a gift, so the premium didn't bother me.
When I have a larger place to live, and I'm not moving so often, I think getting a full server would be the way to go. And for that there isn't really a /g/-favorite that I know of. The only bit of advice I can muster is, whether you build your own or buy one, don't succumb to the 'I'll be fine with [x] number of bays, it'll save money.' Figure out a budget before hand, and max out on the enclosure. Drives are cheap, the place you mount them isn't.
Oh, and Synology makes it pretty easy to administer for several people if you're just dealing with family and friends. That's a perk, since I don't have time to troubleshoot a million configuration issues for each person with an account.
