I now have two PS2 Slim consoles. One I of course use to play games every now and then, is there anything interesting I can do with the second? I'm open to hacking up the case a bit should a good idea necessitate.

The extent of my console modding experience is soldering a fan into an N64 and cutting a space in the case lid for it.

My only other plan should this thread turn up nothing is to put and 80mm-ish fan above the left side of the console, where the bulk of the heat spreader is, and probably soft-mod (abundance of small capacity flash drives).

I actually just noticed that the fan here appears to be running of the USB port on the front. Could avoid some soldering, which I'm shite at.

Don't know what to say about the fan, but as far as softmodding it goes, check out FreeMCBoot. That's the go-to softmod for the PS2, and covers every single thing you might want a modded PS2 to do. Then, check out Open PS2 Loader. I use it on my phat to boot .ISO's off the internal HDD, but if you're using it on a slim, you can use it to boot ISO's that are on your PC through your router.

But seriously, modded PS2's aren't as exciting as modded Xbox 360's or PS3's or even OG Xbox's because of how weak the system is internally. Outside of FreeMCBoot, Open PS2 Loader, and POPstarter for limited PSX on USB loading, there's really nothing else you can do with it.

6th gen and later consoles a fan inside. You can replace it with a Noctua® fan for less noise.

Moot point anyways, I traded a slim I found in a snowbank for a phat so I could mod it via a network adapter.

The DS lite is pretty aesthetic too imo, but they had to go and ruin it by having the GBA cartridges stick out. But yea the slim just looks great and doesn't take much space

Good question. See, Sony tried real hard when the 3.55 keys leaked to sue everybody involved and keep them hidden, then everybody tried to have a dick waving contest saying that they had the new keys but couldn't leak them because Sony would sue them first :^) , so the scene died instantly because of it.

You're going to need to downgrade to 3.55 first, provided you're not already on it or a lower firmware, but good luck finding a guide on how to do it, or a list of the hundreds of various chips and development boards you'll need. Pretty much all of them are filled with gaping holes where vital information should be, and nobody wants to finish the guides because "You were all stupid for upgrading past 3.55 4 years ago, didn't you know any better back then!?" while spouting "just buy a Progskeet" when it's quite a bit more complicated than that.

Check out /vg/. They have a homebrew general that can get you started.

Supposedly some PS2 processors have a slight clock speed boost (up to 299Mhz), however the only information I can find is that it's on the 'newer models'. That's way too vague - I have a 700xx model, is there any way to find out if I have the slight clock boost?
