It's so that code and data has the same form.

A piece of Lisp code is itself a list.
So it's easy to write a Lisp program that writes/alters other Lisp programs or even itself.

You really don't want to give meaning to white space, that's a terrible idea.

And, again, it's just how lists are defined, for example:
(1 1 2 3 5 8 13)
You can't really improve on that.

start with C++ using the book "Jumping into C++" by Alex Alain. it targets the demographic of people looking for babby's first lang who also wan't a lang that they can keep using indefinitely. it takes you from the basics to some more advanced and useful things.
