Hey /g/, low-tier techfag here.

I want to build a desktop for gaming that'll end up costing in the ballpark of 1 grand. This is a list I've made of things so far, whaddya think?

Get an i5 and spend more on the graphics card. You'd have to go way outside your budget to get a graphics card that wouldn't get bottle-necked before the i5

Get cheaper motherboard, go i7 4790k, boards are cheaper, and ram is ddr3, so cheaper. Get a 970 with money saved. Try to get a 256 gb ssd instead of hhd.

Does the ddr3 ram have any significant loss in speed?
I was considering ssd, but a 500gb hdd is about 40% the price of a 256gb ssd. Is the speed really worth that much of a price jump?

Actually right now the difference between ddr3 and ddr4 isn't even noticeable, in 2-3 we might see a big difference in speeds between em. Hell, ddr4 has higher latencies than ddr3, so just go with the cheaper choice

Oh, good to know. Is 16gb ram necessary for moderately-intensive gaming purposes? Feels like a lot, but I'm not sure if 8 will cut it.

Also, heeding the advice from >>51083800, I'm thinking of pic related motherboard and an i7-4790k.

i7s will not help games in any way. i7s are productivity cpus. It has that extra power for rendering and shit.
Get an i5 if you are just gaming. You are literally wasting money with the i7. You will most likely see a 1 fps difference. Games these days don't use that much hyperthreading. Use that money to get a better gpu, preferably a 390. There you will see an increase in performance.

And I swear to god if you say you might not have enough power for it then you should just buy an xbox. 750 watts is more than enough for a 390.

Most games these days, if you haven't noticed, only use like one of those cores. Look at the benchmarks. Most of those games even the i5 is beating the i7.
