i think you're confusing "highly configurable" with "customizable installation" because the difference is that with gentoo the software, and kernel are compiled on your hardware. it's almost as if the software was designed for your hardware. you get the performance of a mac

but it's because i'm on a vm, and intend to recompile a version after i install it, then copy it over after the fact, since i'm trying to get the most optimized kernel possible for this vm

i am thinking of doing that. My computer had the HDD die, so might as well take the time to change to a new distro. i don't know if i would even notice a difference once things are setup

When I first used Gentoo I used genkernel.
Since I had no idea what the fuck I was doing.
Over time I optimized the kernel as I learned.

Nothing wrong with genkernel for a first kernel. The beauty of Gentoo is you can change that and remove the bloat "fer reals" later.
