do those soft rubber cases simlar to this pic really help with stopping the screen from shattering when dropped. or do I really need to get one of those two layer ones with a soft shell then hard shell on top

If anything, they do two things. 1. prevent drops by providing grip if you have a slippery phone. 2. absorb some of the impact force both directly as a cushion, and transferring it across the back of the case, putting some of the energy into deformation.

It's protected my nexus 5 for a year and a half, got it for $1.5 from China.

I dropped my phone a lot with the case on (spigen slim armor) and the screen never shattered. I was getting tired of the bulkiness so I started using it without the case. A couple days later I dropped it and the screen smashed.

It's not the slimmest case but its no otterbox, anyway I'd say cases of any thickness give you a better chance at protecting the phone then no case

No they are different, silicon will tend to stick to your pocket while tpu is more "slick" I guess. Also the tpu doesn't fuck the back of your phone when the inevitable dust/dirt get in between the case and phone. As for wear they are cheap so the tpu tends to brown over time. I have had mine for about a year and I paid like $2 and its only really noticeable when you take the case off. Mine is clear but they come in different colors. It hasn't ripped or teared though so functionally its 100%

Get a tempered glass protector for facedown falls.
I got one off ebay for $9 and it protected my phone amazingly along with >>51084826, I've dropped it so much and nothing's broken yet.

My apartment is some edgy new bs design and they thought it was "hip" to have bare concrete floors. Anyway I've dropped my a lot, it seems like everyday and nothing but a few scratches on the bezel.
This is a no case iShill 5.
I've had it for 2 years and no case. I don't really think cases are needed anymore.

I do, buy unfortunately the one I bought (I think its one with a knife on it titled "GLASS") was a huge fingerprint magnet. I don't think the oliophobic coating lasted at all. And it just kept getting foggy. Fuck that man. I took off the protector and risked it. But man I should have not taken it off until I purchased a better quality glass.

If the case provides a raised lip, you might still have a chance. I've sent my phone flying to the sidewalk face down a few times and it survived.
