It won't install it, but it's going to make it look like it's about to. Also, in the case of the "bug" that got pushed out a few weeks ago, it will keep bothering you once it starts that process and there's no easy way to remove it

Good for MS. Retards refusing to apply updates and security patches blaming MS for their problems are getting tiring.

When I used to do repairs, vast majority of computers that have been run through the shitter had updates turned off because the owner "was tired of the updates taking too long".

W10 forced updates and now this are the best thing to happen to consumer plebs. Apple already proved normalfags don't want control over their own devices, they want someone else to do it for them.

It's hilarious to see all these nerds complaining about not having "control of updates" as if they were the target demographic of windows or meaningful to microsoft in any way. Home edition is for the normalfags, normalfags can't have control over updates or they'll fuck up. People who do need control over updates, namely those on work environments, do have it because they have the pro or enterprise version.
If you want control over updates, get the pro. If you don't want to get the pro, fuck off. Get Linux. You make no difference to the market anyway.

Is there a way to get Windows 10 for free yet? I just want to play a couple of games. I do 99.99% of my work on Linux, but WINE isn't good enough for DX11 and DX12 stuff yet

So frustrating. A copy of Windows OEM would cost more than my PC.

There are a few issues wrt updates from the user perspective

1. Interrups work flow. Literally unforgivable that Windows will force you to restart while you're busy doing shit to install updates. There's no reason you can't put off the downloaded updates until next boot.

2. Bandwidth. Downloading gbs of updates for people that have limited bandwidth is an extremely bad user experience. From what I've seen, the average north american has 300gb of bandwidth, but this is actively getting reduced by ISPs. I predict it'll be 100gb soon on average and now you're in territory where you have to make every gb count (imagine sharing 100gb between like 3 or more people)

Hell, I couldn't even get it working with some simple games over Steam because Steam got completely fucked in the most recent WINE version... I had to do some PlayOnLinux mod BS and all

Like I can tolerate all that up to a point, but I just want a clean and easy solution.

Plus, some games are even banning your account if they detect your OS is Linux.

I have a 2nd gen i3 3.2ghz, 8gb ram, ssd and a gtx450 or 460 or something which is probably less than $200 today considering I bought it for $350 like 3 or 4 years ago

I thought this too. I got a free copy of pro on my tablet (which is no longer on the insider program nor have I, on the most recent install, signed in with my ms account) and it has not deactivated. I tried installing 10 pro on another computer and signed up for the insider program and it never actually activated.

I did, every result pretty much categorically stated it's not banned, not only that but the official OSX client uses TransGaming's fork of WINE.

Moreover, the actual ban I found, was a guy who had previously used Debian 8.2 with WINE a-ok then decided to try and run it on Windows 10 for better performance and got banned...

You don't have log in a root to bypass logging in. During the install for Ubuntu at least, you can just choose to not be prompted to login each time. If you log out, then you do have to log back in.

Has anyone noticed that Dell, HP, ASUS, or any manufacturer really, is getting really brazen in the name of "forced Windows upgrades?"

All of them are notorious for dummying-out core ACPI functions in the BIOS's of newer desktops and laptops to prevent any OS that isn't 8 and onward from being installed, causing Windows 7 and co. to BSOD upon installation. There's absolutely no way around it, and Dell support especially likes to play dumb anytime you bring it up while giving out stock answers

If you upgrade daz loadered Windows 7 to Windows 10 the loader will still be on the disk due to it not touching boot loaders on upgrade however you can clean install afterwards and It will still be activated.

Am I understanding you right: So you can upgrade from daz 7 to 10, then afterwards make another clean install of 10?

My real question is, can you afterwards make a clean install of 10 to another hdd? My current situation is that I need to boot 7 from a crappy old hdd because my main drive is 3TB and daz can't boot off it AND use the whole 3TB, if you know what I mean (forgot the acronyms, it's something about a BIOS feature you need to enable to access 2+TB but with this feature enabled daz can't boot off such a drive).

Guess I could just try it, but I bet somebody else here has/had the exactly same scenario and already did it.

When I upgraded the ssd on my desktop and wifi card and reinstalled win10 it wouldn't activate. I had to reinstall 8.1 then upgrade again and I ended up with the same key anyway.

At first when I heard that Windows 10 would be free I was so fucking happy. I thought M$ finally came to their senses and realized that there is no market for paid OSes anymore - there shouldn't be, at least for the common user.

Then I actually read articles and found out it's going to be an upgrade for existing Win7 / 8 machines and I thought "Well, this is still better than nothing."

When the updates were pushed, I wanted so badly to install it, but GWX wouldn't let me, stating "You do not have enough resources" (and yeah, with a shit Duo and 2GB DDR2 you can't do much..). With that done, the "Get Windows 10" icon thing wouldn't fucking disappear. Then I was like "Right mate, you teasing me ? wtf ?".

And then I read more about their telemetry and botnet services and I was so fucking relieved I didn't do the upgrade. Then I hacked my system to disable a lot of M$ services (including GWX) and now I'm transitioning to Linux. I toyed around with a few distros before, but I never used any as my main OS.

tl;dr Windows 10 turned me from M$ fanboy to Linux fanboy

Though I have been made aware that daz activated copies that are upgraded don't stay activated with windows 10 after 30 days. I'm not sure of the accuracy of that statement though. Just an FYI.

Just installed Linux on a server at work tonight, and of course the situation with it is the complete fucking opposite of what we're all going through here with GWX. The toughest part was setting up my partitions with cfdisk for 30 seconds, which is quite fun. Never once did the machine disobey me or do anything underhanded.

But this shit here, this windows update fuckery...this is not fun. This is not enjoyable. It makes me hate to turn on my machine. It makes me dread each new popup notification.

For the younger folks out there...this isn't normal. This isn't how computers are, it was never like this. Back in the day you could OWN a machine, if you told it what to do, it would DO it. Not this shit here, with some greedy fucker pushing folks around, and most of them not noticing or some pretending to like it.

I'm starting to feel like a slave to this shit, and it's pretty fucked up.

Like I said, I changed my wifi card and my ssd. Upon reinstall, it would not activate, even with the same key. Nothing else changed. I reinstalled 8.1 and upgraded (this time I did not sign in with a ms account) and it activated just fine. It's still even the same key. My experience with windows 10 has been that activation is fucky and sometimes works when it shouldn't and doesn't when it should.

Are you limited to only one HDD? I usually run my systems SSD only or SSD + HDD if I can. Also, KMS should work on GPT partitions with win 7 enterprise.

You've been able to install other OSes on Mac hardware for quite some time, especially after the Intel switch.

Hell, OS X even comes with a utility to install Windows as a dual-boot option, even going so far as to provide all the drivers you need for your computer.

Apple doesn't do the same. When a new OS comes out it asks you if you want it then never mentions it again except for a banner in the app store. It also doesn't force transition updates on you like GWX nor does it begin to download parts of a new system until you specifically start the process.

Nigger what the fuck are you doing? You replaced the entire Motherboard to do that, a new mobo is like a new pc, of course you need to fucking reinstall most of the time, hardware ID is totally diferent.
Just make a fresh install of 7 with your same key, activate throu phone and upgrade to 10 again.
Optional, make a fresh windows 10 install after upgrade, you only need to upgrade once to make it register on MS servers.

The fuck, windows doesn't deactivate keys from previous versions that upgraded to 10, you're just trying to activate 7 on different hardware, use the phone activation and press "1" when asked on how many machines is installed the license.

You don't need to chat with someone for that.
When you call the automated activation system a machine ask for numbers displayed on the activation screen from windows, its like 7-9 fields with six 0-9 numbers, you type then on the phone and the machine ask you that, just type "1" and it will tell you back the activation ID that you type back on that window screen and activate that way.
Try it one more time, it should work, I have done this plenty of times with same key for 1-3 devices.
OR just install 7, use DazLoader (from digitalife.info forums) to activate and then upgrade to 10, you will end up with a legit 10 install.
